HOW MAN SHOULD

BEHAVE FOR THE

SUSTAINABILITY OF
MOTHER EARTH
Environmental Principles #4, #5 & #6
Learning Objectives:

The CWTS Trainees are expected:

 classify change as natural or man – made;
 explain the causes and effects of the man – made changes;
 explain the hierarchy of solid waste management
 segregate solid waste accordingly as
compostable/biodegradable waste, recyclable/
non – biodegradable, non-recyclable/residual waste,
and special /hazardous household waste;
 distinguish perpetual resource, potentially renewable resource,
and non- renewable resource; and
 give ways on how to help on resource conservation and
management.
Environmental Principle No. 4

“Everything changes”
NATURAL CHANGE
 Thosethat govern the
natural processes of
nature.
 Man has no control
over these changes.
KINDS OF NATURAL CHANGE
INTERNAL CHANGE
 Activities happening inside the earth’s surface.
example: Volcanism, earthquakes, diastrophism

EXTERNAL CHANGE
 Activities happening on the earth’s surface.
example: Weathering and erosion.
MAN-MADE CHANGES
(ANTHROPOGENIC)

 These changes lie outside the bounds of

natural changes.
“ Man invented and
discovered FIRE, so
as POLLUTION.”
Environmental Principle No. 5
“ Everything must go
somewhere.”
SOLID WASTE
 Varietyof materials
that are rejected or
discarded as being
spent, useless,
worthless or excess.
REFUSE GARBAGE
Things rejected as Strictly refers to
worthless or animals or vegetable
insignificant in value. wastes.
TRASH TOXIC
Useless and worthless Potentially to
matter that is unsightly cause injury to
but does not contain living organisms.
odor.

SEGREGATION
OF SOLID WASTES
COMPOSTABLE/ BIODEGRADABLE.
 Leftover/spoiled food, fish/fowl cleanings,
seeds, bones, tissue paper.

RECYCLABLE/ NON-BIODEGRADABLE
 Metal, glass, rubber, dry paper, cloth/ dry
processed fiber.
NON-RECYCLABLE/
RESIDUAL WASTES
 Sanitary napkins, disposable
diapers, used/ worn-out rugs,
polyvinyl chloride(PVC)

SPECIAL/ HAZARDOUS
HOUSEHOLD WASTES
 Paint, thinners, tires, sprays,
canisters
WHY WE SHOULD MANAGE OUR
SOLID WASTES?
 Everything is thrown away.
 Running out of space.
 Clogged water system.
 Spread of disease.
 Contamination.
Environmental Principle No.6
“Ours is a Finite Earth”
RESOURCES

PERPETUAL NON-RENEWABLE

Direct Solar Winds, Metallic

Fossil Fuels
energy tides, Minerals
flowing
water

POTENTIALLY

Floras &
Fresh Air Fresh Water Fresh Soil
Faunas
RESOURCES
 Anything that we get from living and non-
living things to meet our needs and
wants.
TYPES OF RESOURCES
RENEWABLE (Potentially
Renewable Resources)
 Can be replenish through
biochemical and physical cycle.

NON-RENEWABLE
RESOURCES
 Do not replenish themselves.
PERPETUAL RESOURCES
 Not affected by human use.
TYPES OF RENEWABLE
RESOURCES
ORGANIC TYPE.
 Plant and animal specie.

INORGANIC TYPE.
 Water and certain gases.
WHY CONSERVATION
MATTERS?
 Energy Conservation

 Water Conservation

 Material Conservation
