Principle of a spirit level:
arc l = Rα Large diameter tube

h= Lα, α = h/L
l= Rh/L
If α is taken in seconds
l = R x (α/ 206265)
(1rad = 206265 sec of arc)
If the scale division; l = 2mm, Level base
and corresponding angle change, α = 2”
R = l / α = 2 / (2/206265) = 206265 mm
= 206.265 m

Example:
Let one end of the spirit level be raised an
angle α. If this causes the bubble to move
1 division, then
α radians = l/R
If the scale division is 2.5mm and
represents 10 sec of arc, then:

10 sec = 0.0000485 radians = 2.5 / R

R = 2.5/0.0000485 = 51500 mm
or R = 51.5 m approx.

Let the base length = 250mm,
The change in height h corresponding to
one scale division (2.5mm)

0.0000485 rad = h/250

or h = 0.012mm

h is the scale value; (0.012mm/250mm)

or 0.48mm/m
If the base length becomes 125mm, h will
be 0.006mm
