PCA-Symbolic Frame Worksheet
Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the symbolic frame
2. Apply the symbolic frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

Two years ago, I was assigned to oversee the construction and commissioning of
a large-scale reverse osmosis system for land reclamation after mining. Errors were found
in the engineer's drawings, so I collaborated to correct them, and commenced
construction. Despite an initial delay due to the wrong materials being ordered, the team
began building what they could while waiting. When the materials arrived, we efficiently
assembled the system, completing the project a week ahead of schedule. Effective time
management and proactive collaboration were key to the success in meeting the project's
goals.

2) Describe how the symbols of the organization influenced the situation.

A significant symbol shaping this situation was the company's distinctive logo—
an assertive arrow pointing boldly to the right. This visual representation embodies our
commitment to progress and moving forward. The project I spearheaded was a
prerequisite for advancing to the next phase within the organization. The logo served as a
constant reminder, a powerful symbol urging us to persist in our journey despite any
setbacks, emphasizing the importance of continuous advancement.

The organizational culture played a pivotal role in shaping this scenario. We

cultivated a culture centered around a 'work until the job is done' attitude. This instilled a
strong commitment among team members, prompting many to go the extra mile to ensure
project completion. Despite the untimely arrival of materials, the ingrained culture of
relentless dedication ensured that the team proactively tackled tasks within reach,
averting any setbacks and maintaining our pace.

3) Recommend how you would use organizational symbols for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

As an alternative approach, I would have employed symbols to accentuate

milestone celebrations. While our primary focus was on the project's overall completion
by a specific date, the smaller victories achieved along the way went unnoticed.
Implementing a practice of commemorating the small successes through events like
luncheons or public announcements would have not only recognized individual and
collective achievements but also significantly elevated morale within the team.

Another approach could have involved a more tangible demonstration of

leadership support. While I led the team, the visible presence of higher-ups actively
acknowledging our efforts and witnessing our progress would have made a significant
impact. Unfortunately, the leadership at that time rarely ventured into the field. Their
direct engagement could have not only boosted morale but also instilled a profound sense
of pride within the team, reinforcing the idea that our work was truly valued and
impactful.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

Reflecting on past experiences, I recognize that enhancing team morale is a

crucial aspect that I would address differently if faced with a similar situation. In
hindsight, I realize the potential impact of employing symbols to uplift the team spirit.
Whether through celebratory events or public acknowledgment of individual and
collective achievements throughout the project, these symbolic gestures could have
contributed positively to our work environment.

Even though the project was successful, I believe that a higher level of team
morale could have further enhanced collaboration, creativity, and overall job satisfaction.
In future endeavors, I am inclined to integrate symbolic elements into project
management to not only meet objectives but also to cultivate a more vibrant and
motivated team environment.
