In communication, when we use words or language it is called verbal


communication.

Advantages of Oral Communication

 Speed: Spoken words take less time than writing.


 Able to get personal attention: From both the speaker and the
listener.
 Saves time and money: Cheapest and speedy communication than
the written communication.
 Instant feedback: Feedback can be taken in a very short time.
 Supplemented by non-verbal clues: It can take help of gestures,
postures and other non-verbal clues to communicate better.

Limitations of Oral Communication

 No evidence: As it is spoken words, there is no evidence created.


 Problematic if the communicator and the receiver are far away: Both
parties should have a considerable closeness in terms of space.
 More like informal: As it is not recorded it may be considered as an
informal communication to some extent.
 Prone to physical noise: Noise or disturbances can hamper the
smooth and proper transmission of message.
 Not legally accepted: As it does not create any document, it is not
legally accepted.

Written Communication

Written communication is the communication where the message or


information is exchanged by written words.

Advantages of Written Communication

 Legally accepted: As there is evidence/ written documents, it is


accepted legally.
 More formal: When the message is written, it is more formal in nature.
 Less interruption: As the message is being transmitted from sender to
receiver directly, there is less chance of disturbances or interruptions.
 Future reference: As it is documented, it can be used/ preserved for
future reference.
 Authentic feedback: As we can take time to give feedback, it is
more authentic and valuable in nature.

Limitations of Written Communication

 Time consuming: As it is in written mode, the drafting takes more


time.
 Lack of flexibility: In terms of ammendment, information or other
things, it can not be altered easily.
 Delayed feedback: It takes more time to receive/ get written
feedback.
 Expensive: It is expensive in terms of money, time & efforts.
 Requires more skill: if someone doesn’t have a decent skill of writing,
then the communication can be disrupted.

Non-Verbal Communication
In communication, when we use signs, symbols,
expressions etc. it is called non-verbal communication.

Non-verbal communication is usually understood as the process of
communication through sending and receiving wordless messages.
