STRESSES

Part 2
NORMAL STRESS

Normal stress is basically defined as the stress acting in a direction

perpendicular to the area.
SHEAR STRESS
Shear stress is defined as the stress component that acts
in the plane of the sectioned area.

What force is required to punch a 20-mm diameter hole in
a plate that is 25 mm thick? The shear strength is 350
MN/𝑚2 .
S IT UAT IO N D
In the figure below, a hole is to be
punched out of a plate having a shear
strength of 40 ksi. The compressive
strength in the punch is limited to 50 ksi.
Find the following:
a. Thickness of a plate in which a hole
2.5 inches in diameter can be
punched
b. If the plate is 0.25 in thick, determine
the diameter of the hole that can be
punched
BEARING STRESS
Bearing stress is defined as the pressure caused by the surface loads
when two bodies are pressed against each other. It is a compressive
force developed on the area of contact.
S IT UAT IO N A
The lap joint shown in the figure below is fastened by ¾ in-diameter rivets. Find
the load P that can be applied if the working stress is 18 ksi for bearing in the
plate. Assume that the applied load is distributed evenly among the four rivets,
and neglect friction between the plates. (Analyze bearing only)
