Coordination Study Of IEEE 9 Bus System

1. Load Flow Analysis:

Load Flow Analysis is performed on ETAP and Results are show on Single Line Diagram Below,

2. 3-Phase short circuit Fault is placed on Bus-6 and following results are obtained,
3. Single line to ground SLG short circuit Fault is placed on Bus-6 and following results are
obtained,

4. Line to Line LL short circuit Fault is placed on Bus-6 and following results are obtained,
5. Double line to ground LL-G short circuit Fault is placed on Bus-6 and following results are
obtained,

6. Coordination study is performed and fault is placed on bus 5, differential protection operates
Protection coordination study is done to determine the trip settings of each protective device in
the power system so that maximum protection with minimum interruption is provided for all
faults that may happen in the system

An IEEE 9 bus system is considered for protection coordination analysis as shown in above
Figure. The system includes generators working on different modes. Loads of several ratings
are connected in system. Below Table includes ratings and mode of generators and connected
loads in the system.

Equipment Mode of
Rating Operation
Generator
G1 50 MW, 16.5 kV Swing

Generator G2 42.5 MW,18 kV Voltage Controlled

Generator Voltage
G3 42.5 MW,13.8 kV Controlled
Load A 55 MW, 230 kV, 92.85% PF
Load B 45 MW, 230 kV, 94.87% PF
Load C 50 MW, 230 kV, 94.39% PF

Siemens 7SJ600 is used as overcurrent and instantaneous relay function. However ABB RADHA
is used for differential protection.

Protection scheme has been designed for IEEE 9 bus system. Primary protection is operating
properly for almost all relays. However backup protection causes loss of generation and load loss in
many cases. Different percentages of load loss and generation loss has been discussed for various
cases of faults. Since overcurrent relays are non-directional relays thus malfunctioning of certain
relays is observed. This malfunctioning can be reduced by using directional overcurrent relays.
Moreover, false tripping of differential relay can be reduced by using percentage differential relay.
