Tejeros Convention: A Position Paper

On March 22, 1897, the Magdiwang and Magdalo factions of the Katipunan met for the Tejeros
congress. The first presidential election in the Philippines will take place. The convention
provided an explanation of the contemporary political system in the Philippines by showcasing
the Katipunan's organizational structure and political personalities. During the Tejeros
convention, Bonifacio was unfairly treated in particular. In addition, I concur with Bonifacio that
the will of the majority should be respected and obeyed and that the outcome of an election
should be accepted without question, regardless of the victor's social or educational standing.

Knowing what happened during

Tejeros' convention, I thought
Bonifacio was completely unjust.
According to Alvarez and
Agoncillo's accounts, before the
actual election, the majority
stressed and agreed
that regardless of the state of life
and educational attainment, they
must recognize the majority's
decision
for the elected officials - which
was not done due to Tirona's
opposition. I assumed it was a
disorganized
assembly because they simply
wanted to change their minds from
time to time. What is the point of
voting
if the elected officials are
simply replaced because one is
opposed to it? Tirona protested
and even
humiliated Bonifacio in front of
other leaders, even though he did
not win the presidency. It was an
insult
on Bonifacio's part, and they
simply ignored what he has done
for the country. Where has
equality gone?
Simply, they did not adhere to the
prior agreement. Thus, we can
conclude that there is no sense of
equality
or freedom in the election
happened. Afterward, the
convention led to the revolution of
establishing a new
government — "Republic of the
Philippines" (Republica de
Filipinas), commonly known
today as the
"Republika ng Biak-na-Bato"
whereas at those times we have
been freed against the Spaniards

Andres Bonifacio is not treated fairly in the elections held at the Tejeros convention. In addition
to leading the Katipunan and fighting for Philippine independence from the Spanish, he was
criticized for his educational accomplishments, which were not covered by the initial pact.
Bonifacio might not have been murdered in such a heartbreaking and shameful way if they had
simply honored the outcomes of the overwhelming vote. Given everything he had done for our
nation, he deserved better. We have learned from the Tajeros Assembly that this election was
marked by unfair practices and a lack of equity. Biases existed, much like they do in today's
political contests, and integrity was not appreciated.
