Identifying the Types and Purpose of Computer Devices

I. Learning Competency with Code

LO 4. Identify the Types and Purpose of Output Devices

4.1. Distinguish basic output devices.

4.2. Determine specialized output devices.

II. Background Information for Learners

What is an “Output”?
Output is data that has been processed into a useful form. That is, computers
processed data (input) into information (output).

OUTPUT DEVICES

An output device is a piece of computer hardware that receives data from a

computer and then translates that data into another form. That form may be audio,
visual, textual, or hard copy, such as a printed document.
Output devices are how the manipulated information is returned to us this,
includes:

SPEAKERS
Computer speakers are hardware devices that transform the
signal from the computer's sound card into audio. Speakers create
sound using internal amplifiers that vibrate at different frequencies
according to data from the computer. This produces sound.

MONITOR
This is also called Visual Display Unit (VDU). It is used to get the data in the
form of a soft copy. Their functioning is exactly similar to the television. A monitor is
a piece of computer hardware that displays the video and graphics information
generated by a connected computer through the computer's video card.
Two Types of Monitor
a. CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) – a desktop monitor that contains a
cathode-ray tube. A CRT is a large, sealed tube.
b. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) - a desktop monitor that uses a liquid
crystal display to produce images.
PRINTER
A printer is an output device that creates a copy of
whatever is sent from the computer to the printer. Printers take
electronic data sent from a computer and generate a hard copy.

LCD PROJECTORS
This output device projects computer images or video
onto a screen or other flat surface.

HEADPHONE
Sometimes referred to as earphones, headphones are
hardware output device that are either plug into your computer line out
or your speakers to privately listen to audio without disturbing others.
