Direct current (a.t) - an electric current that flows in one
direction only
Alternating current (a, u)-an electric current whose direction
of flow changes continuously

Cathode ray oscilloscope -an electronic device that can be used

to show differences in graph shape, current direction and
voltage changes for direct and alternating current.

Np = 15 turns Ns = 7 turns

-voltage converter for alternating current

- consists of a laminated soft iron core wrapped by a coil of
coated wire, a prime coil and a secondary coil

studywithadmin - ns
i) step -up transformer
- the primary voltage (input) across the primary coil is lower
than the secondary voltage (output) across the secondary coil
- the number of turns on the primary coil is less than the
number of turns on the secondary coil

ii) step -down transformer

- the primary voltage (input) across the primary coil is higher
than the secondary voltage (output) across the secondary coil
- the number of turns on the primary coil is more than the
number of turns on the secondary coil.

i) power generating station

ii) step -up transformer station

v) main inlet substation
vi) switch field
vii) section substations

i) single phase wiring

- suitable and stable enough for electricity consumption that

does not exceed 10kW or 50A as in residential areas

ii) three phase wiring

- in commercial and industrial areas, electricity consumption of

more than 10kW or 50A, three -phase wiring is more stable.

3-pin plug -electrical appliances such as kettles and irons

- a short fine wire that easily heats up and melts when the
current flowing through it is greater than the value of the
fuse.
- if the wire on the fuse melts, the power supply will be cut
off

i) Cartridge fuse
ii) Replacement wire fuse

Fuse value - the maximum value of current that can flow

through the fuse without causing the fuse wire to melt. (1A,
2A, 3A, 5A, 10A, 13A, 15A and 30A)
example - an electric kettle uses a maximum electric current of
11.34A, then the fuse installed should have a fuse value of
13A

into a beneficial form of output energy

power, P - the rate of electrical energy, E, consumed by an

electrical appliance
current, I - the rate of flow of electric charge, Q, through a
conductor.
Voltage, V - electrical energy, E, used to move a unit of
electrical charge, Q through a conductor.

Cost calculation
Electrical energy consumed (kWh) = power (kW) x Time (h)

* a 2kW kettle takes 10 minutes to boil water. Calculate the

cost of using electricity to boil the water if the rate per unit
is 21 cents

electrical energy used

= 2kW x 10/60 j
= 1/3 kWh
= 1/3 unit

the cost of electricity consumption

= 1/3 x 21 sen
= 7 sen
