Abstract of

ASTM F836M STAINLESS STEEL METRIC NUTS MATERIALS

1997

IFI NOTES:

1. ASTM F836M is a specification developed through the procedures of

ASTM. F836M is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F-16 on
Fasteners. This abstract presents the chemical and mechanical re-
quirements for metric nuts of several stainless steel alloys. It omits
those requirements dealing with applicable documents, quality as-
surance and inspection. For this omitted information. refer to the
complete F836M.
I
2. This specification is based in concept and content of ISO 3506 issued
in 1979. However, basic differences existed in grade designations
between ISO 3506 and ASTM F836M (see Note 2, page 8-79). The
revision of ISO 3506 approved by TC2ISCl in September of 1994 in-
cludes a division of the standard into three parts. ISOI OP 3506-2 in-
cludes Mechanical Properties of Corrosion-Resistant Stainless Steel
Fasteners - Part 2: Nuts. It is expected that this revision will resolve
the designation differences with ASTM F836M. Parts 1 and 3 of ISOI
DP 3506 are for bolts, screws, and studs and set screws and similar
fasteners not under tensile stress, respectively.

3. ASTM F836M-97 is abstracted with permission from the Annual Book

of ASTM Standards, copyright American Society for Testing and Ma-
terials, 100 Barr Harbor Drive, West Conshohocken, PA 19428. U.S.A.

1. SCOPE The property classes with the permissible alloys

for each are listed in Table 1.
1.1 This specification covers the chemical
and mechanical requirements for stainless steel 1.4 This specification is based in concept

ing applications requiring general corrosion re· erty classes, except as given in 1.4. 1, are es-
sistance. sentially identical with classes of the same des-
ignation in ISO 3506.
1.2 Eight groups of stainless steel alloys are
covered, including three austenitic (G rades A 1,
