Abstract of THREAD FORMING AND THREAD CUTTING TAPPING TAPPI NG

ASME 818.6.4
1998 SCREWS AND METALLIC DRIVE SCREWS SCREWS

IFI NOTES:
1. ASME 818.6.4 is a standard developed through the procedures of
the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. 818.6.4 is under
the jurisdiction of ASME Standards Committee 818 and is the di-
rect responsibility of its Subcommittee 6.
2. This abstract presents the dimensional. material and performance
requirements for tapping screws and metallic drive screws. It omits
those requirements dealing with inspection and quality assurance
and a listing of referenced standards. Type C, slotted 100 0 flat coun-
tersunk head and slotted hex (regular and large) have been omitted
because they are not recommended for new designs. Also, hole
size recommendations for tapping screws in various materials have
been omitted because the values are strictly for guidance and are
not necessarily optimum for any given set of application circum-
stances. All of the omitted information is contained in the appen-
dixes of 818.6.4 and, if needed, reference should be made to the
complete standard.
3. The following presentation of 818.6.4 has been extensively altered
editoriaUy to convenience the reader, however, no changes of any
kind have been made to any of the technical content. It is expected
that the changes included in Section I for machine screws, such as

I
reference dimensions for recess width, diameter and depth, and
the addition of the square recess will be included in the next revi-
sion of this standard, see page /-1 .
4. This abstract of ASME 818.6.4-1998 is reprinted with the permis-
sion of its publisher, The American Society of Mechanical Engi-
neers, Three Park Avenue. New York, NY 10016-5990, U.S.A.

NOTES.
(1) Applicable to screw types as indicaled by code symbols below. See referenced tables for thread and point dimensions.
• Type AB thread fonn in9, see Table 6, page H-26.
• Type A thread fonning , except for short lengths, see Appendix E .
... Types B and BP thread fonning, see Table 7; and Types BF and BT thread cutting, see Table 8, pages H-27 and H- 28.
• Type C thread fonning. see Appendix V; and Types 0 , F, G, and T thread cutting, see Table 9, page H-29.
(2) Where specifying nominal size in decimals, zeros preceding decimal and in the fourth decimal place shall be omitted.
(3) Screws of these lengths and shorter shall have undercut heads as shown in Table 12. Use Type AB undercut head screws in
place of Type A screws for these lengths and shorter.
(4) Tabulated values detennined from formula for H max, Appendix A.
(5) No tolerance for gaging diameter is given. If the gaging diameter of the gage used differs from tabulated value, the protrusion
will be affected accordingly and the proper protrusion values must be recalculated using the fonnulas shown in Appendix I.
(6) For additional requirements, see Introductory Notes and General Data, page H-13 and page H-18.

NOTES.
(1) Applicable to screw Iypes as indicated by code symbols below. See referenced tables for thread and point dimensions and
minimum practical screw lengths.
• Type AB thread formin9. see Table 6, page H-26.
• Types B and BP thread forming. see Table 7: and Types BF and BT thread cutting, see Table 6. pages H-27 and H- 28.
• Type C thread forming, see Appendix V: and Types D. F, G, and T thread cutting, see Table 9, page H-29.
(2) Where specifying nominal size In decimals, zeros preceding decimal and in th e fourth decimal place shall be omitted.
(3) Screws of longer lengths shall have head heights as shown in Table 10, page H-30.
(4) No tolerance for gaging diameter is given. If the gagin9 diameter of the gage used differs from tabulated value, the protrusion
will be affected accordingly and the proper protrusion values must be recalculated usin9 the formula s shown In Appendix I.
(5) Not practical to gage.
(6) For additional requirements, refer to Para. 2, page H-16.

NOTES;
(1) Applicable to screw types as indica ted by code symbols below. See referenced tables for thread and point dimensions and
minimum practical screw lengths.
• Type AB thread forming, see Table 6, page H-26.
• Type A thread forming, except for short lengths, see Appendix E .
... Types B and BP thread forming, see Table 7; and Types BF and BT thread cutting, see Table 8, pages H-27 and H-28.
• Type C thread forming, see Appendix V; and Types D, F, G, and T thread cutting, see Table 9, page H-29.
(2) Short screws are those threaded full length. R efer to Para . 2.4. 1 for applicable screw lengths, page H-20.
(3) Where specifying nomina l size in decimals, zeros preceding decimal and in the fourth decimal place shall be omitted .
(4) Maximum diameter shall not exceed minimum plus 0.011 in. for Type A screws, and basic screw diameter for all other screw
types.
(5) Tabulated values determined from formula for H max, Appendi)'; A , page H-59.
(6) No tolerance for gaging diameter is given. If the gaging diameter of the gage used differs from tabulated value, the protrusion
will be affected accordingly and the proper protrusion values must be recalculated using the formulas shown in Appendix t, page
H- 50.
(7) For additional requirements, refer to Para. 2, page H- 18.

(3) A slight rounding of all edges and corners of the hex surfaces of indented hex heads shall be permissible. provided the diameter of the
bearing circle is equal to no less than 90% of the specified minimum width across nats dimension.
(4) Unless otherwise specified by purchaser, regular hex heads shall be furnished. and both regular and large head stytes may be of
indented head, trimmed head, or fully upset nead construction, at the option of manufacturer.
(5) Dimensions across nats and across corners of lne head shall be measured al the point of maximum metal. Taper of sides of hex (angle
between one side and the axis) shall not exceed 2° or 0.004 in., whichever is greater. the specified width across nats being the large
dimension.
(6) The rounding due to lac\( of fill on all six corners of the head shall be reasonably uniform and the width across corners of the nead shall
be such that wIlen a sharp ring having an inside diameter aqualto the specified minimum width across corners is !>lace<:! on the top and
bottom of Ihe head, the head shall protrude by an amounl aquallo. or greater than, the F value tabulated. See Appendix 11 for across
