SCREWS

IFI NOTES:

1. AsME B18.6.5M is a draft revision of a standard developed through

the procedures of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
B18.6.5M is under the jurisdiction of AsME Standards Committee B18
and is the direct responsibility of its Subcommittee 6.

2. B18.6.5M was issued in 1986 and reaffirmed during 1993. Originally

issued as IF/~502 in 1982, it was subsequently withdrawn in 1986 fol-
lowing the publication of the ANslIAsME standard. A revision was
initiated in 1997 to reflect current experience. A letter ballot of a draft
revision was disapproved in November of 1998. In early December of
1998, Subcommittee 6 carried out a review of the negative and other
comments and approved revisions. It is this revised draft based on
Subcommittee 6 actions in December of 1998 which is presented here.
It is expected this version will be approved following a 30-day simUl-
taneous review by B18 and Subcommittee 6.

3. ISO currently has published six standards which feature only the wide
spaced thread. Three of these standards are ISO 1479, ISO 1481 and
ISO 1483 which include Types C and F and are deSignated as Types
AB & B, respectively, in B18.6.5M. Included are hexagon heads, slot-
ted pan heads and slotted raised countersunk (oval) heads. ISO 7049,
ISO 7050, and ISO 7051 include the same Types (C and F) combined
with recessed drives Hand Z which are Type I and Type lA, respec-
tively. Table footnotes where applicable are referenced to the spe-
cific ISO standard. Except for the recessed flat countersunk heads,
the dimensional differences are few from those of ISO. However, the
Types DJ F, and T screws in North America feature a short shoulder
under the head and recess depths that are consistent with those
screws in other head styles and thread types. Hex flange heads, the
Type 11/ square recess and thread cutting tapping screws conforming
to Types BF, BT, D, F and T are not included at this time in ISO stan-
dards. Currently ISO is developing a new standard series featuring
the hexalobular drive.

4. Referenced standards are omitted in this reprint of B18.6.5M-1998

draft revision. Also omitted are hole sizes for various materials which
are given for guidance in Appendix VI of the standard. See Section K,
page K-9, for Appendix VI and for approximate hole sizes for Types
D, F and T thread cutting screws. Copies of the complete standard
are available from The American Society of Mechanical Engineers,
Three Park Avenue, New York, NY 10016-5990, U.S.A.
