IFI NOTES:
1. ASME 818.2.3.4M Is a standard developed through the procedures
of The American Society of Mechanical Engineers. B1B.2.3.4M is
under the jurisdiction of ASME Standards Committee 818 and is the
direct responsibility of its Subcommittee 2.
2. B1B.2.3.4M was issued In 1979 as an American National Standard.
I
Following its introduction, a study cBrrled out In Canada. Identified
opportunities to optimize the relationship of wrenchability, material
usage and manufacturing convenience. This resulted in a revision
which was issued in 1984 and reaffirmed In 1995. The draft revision
Included here will eliminate other differences with ISO 4162. This
draft will be submitted to B18 and Subcommittee 2 letter ballot in
January of 1999. Its changes are similar to those of the metric hex
cap screw standard in draft revision. This draft is expected to gain
approval. Users should consult with ASME for current draft status.
3. Key revisions in this draft include:
The government standard items and part numbering system of
Appendix 11/ is deleted and replaced by a 818 standard part num-
bering reference to ASME B18.24.1 found in Para. 28.1.
Para. 7 makes clear that the head height does not include raised
markings.
Bearing face runout is now to be measured on the actual bearing
circle instead of at a minimum bearing circle as described In Para.
13.
Straightness at maximum material condition is specified. A rail
gage replaces the sleeve gage as specified in Para. 18.
The transition threads shall have a rounded root contour. This
replaces the requirement of a rounded root contour, no radius of
which shall be less than the specified minimum at the root of the
full form thread for Property Class 10.9 and higher, per Para. 20.4.
In Tables 1 and 2 for M16, the head height, K max, the wrenching
height, Kw min, and the thickness of Gage A, T. max and T. min,
are each increased by 0.1 mm to agree with 15010154162.2.
A new Appendix 11 details a comparison with ISO 4162 and 1501
DIS 4162.2.
Dimensional conformance has been specified in Para. 26.
Workmanship and accordance with ASTM F78B1F788M is speci-
fied in Para. 24.
