1. How do conventional building construction methods hinder the city's efforts to
address the housing crisis? Highlight the drawbacks of these methods in terms of time,
cost, and sustainability.
- Conventional building methods are slowly going out of fashion for its
disadvantages that somewhat outweigh the advantages. Nowadays, people in the
construction industry tend to go for methods that offer more efficiency and that
provides flexibility which is something that conventional building methods cannot
attain. Traditional building methods are usually done in a time-consuming manner,
that utilizes a lot of resources and usually is a less customizable option for the end
users (Pine Social, 2023). Conventional building methods tend to require more
manpower in its process thus accounts for the labor. As mentioned earlier, the use
of conventional building methods takes up time, this is due to the construction of
foundation or formwork of the structure being tedious. Taking concrete as an
example, in conventional methods, casting concrete must be done on site and
once the concrete has been casted, it can no longer be modified. Modifications
done on conventional methods can be difficult to achieve, consequently, runs down
on its sustainability. Another factor is that the quality control in conventional
building methods is not assured and therefore can have setbacks not only during
but also after construction.

2. Explain the importance of compact development, efficient land use, and appropriate
development locations in the context of housing solutions. How can these aspects
contribute to more sustainable and equitable urban development?
- Promoting mixed land use development that correlates with a cohesive public
transport system is highly essential in creating a highly efficient housing solution,
this encourages low energy consumption and an efficient traffic flow within an
urban environment. Effective compact development is also based on progressive
development locations wherein accessibility is considered for residents in a certain
area. According to BP 220, socialized housing developments shall be in vicinity
with an access road that is able to accommodate with the growing demand of the
development area.

3. What role do innovative concepts and technologies play in enhancing housing

production capacity? Provide examples of technological solutions that can expedite
construction, lower costs, and promote sustainable development practices.
- When innovative concepts are integrated in creating efficient housing solutions, it
will have a greater chance of being put into construction, especially in the context
of the Philippines. Innovation is something that attracts a majority if it benefits them
or doesn’t cause any hindrances. If certain technologies are being put to the
development of socialized housing, particularly the ones that benefit not only the
end users but also the government, it will certainly be implemented in a timely
manner. One common technology that has been highly used in the country that’s
also know for lowering its costs of electricity is the use of solar power as its source
of energy. In terms of construction pace, the use of BIM or building information
management has become a trend when it comes to identifying the problems within
the construction itself which saves a lot of time and money during the process.
Another innovation that has become prominent especially when making projects
on a bigger scale is the use of mechanization. This pertains to the use of cranes,
excavators and bulldozers which also expedites the process of construction.
Contractors have their eye on what is sustainable for construction, as this reduces
the carbon footprint of the process, which is also helpful in creating a land
development within an urban area. The use of sustainable building materials has
become popular since it complies with the demand of the market and is essentially
better for the environment. The use of prefabricated structures is also a method
that is used to make construction more efficient. Modular construction solutions
have been widespread to startup contractors as this not only provides efficiency,
but also reduces material waste.

4. Explore the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing sustainable

housing solutions on a large scale in the city. How can these solutions contribute to
environmental conservation and improved quality of life for residents?
- In numerous third-world countries, the biggest challenge that has hindered
development projects such as socialized housing is the rapid increase in
population in urban areas. Factors such as poverty, inefficient mortgage system,
high inflation, and increasing construction costs have built a barrier between low-
income citizens and affordable housing. Rural-urban migration has been rising
over time, socialized housing within an urban area might increase the number of
migrants within the city which calls for a higher demand in housing solutions. On
the other hand, socialized housing provides many opportunities especially for its
end-users. One is the ability to dwell in a decent neighborhood as opposed to living
in a informal settlement community which improves the quality of life of the
residents. Another opportunity is increased convenience in public transportation. A
well-developed housing community should be equipped with accessible roads to
its residents especially in an urban area. Informal settlement has also been a
contributor to environmental challenges as it falls outside of government regulation,
with socialized housing, it can be regulated by said government which can also
reduce a substantial amount of carbon emissions.
