School: St. Francis JH Students will begin the lesson by playing the math game Approaching the Root
Game. This game allows students to practice estimating square roots in a

group. Next, students will play Matho (Bingo) that is focused on Pythagorean
Relationship questions. The purpose of this lesson is to review important
concepts, math questions, and equations from section 1.1. The general
learning outcomes from the Alberta Program of Studies are Numbers (1,2) and
Shape and Space (1).

GLO: SLO:
(1) Develop Number Sense 1.1 - Demonstrate an understanding
of perfect squares and square roots,
(4) Shape and Space concretely, pictorially and symbolically

Introduction: Introduction to Review Class. (5 min)


- Explain to students that the purpose of this class is to review section
1.1 to benefit their studying, learning, and review for their first unit
test in math.

Activity: Number line papers


(1) Approaching the Root Game (33 min) Deck of cards
- Students will be introduced to the Approaching the Root Game. Calculators
pencils
Students will need to explain the rules before getting into groups and
playing the game.
- The purpose of this game is to practice estimating square roots and
then checking their answer with a calculator.

Students will have 1 minute to clean this activity up and move onto the next
one

(2) Matho (Bingo) Pythagorean Relationship Version (33 min)


- Students will each receive a bingo card with different numbers on it.
The first person to have a line in bingo will win a prize.
- The purpose of this game is for students to practice their pythagorean
theorem questions. There are various questions; find the length of the
hypotenuse, find the length of one of the squares, find the area of one
of the squares on the triangles, using pythagorean theorem in word
problems.

Students will have 1 minute to clean this activity up and get ready to leave
class.

Conclusion: Review (3 min)


- Students will go over any last minute questions as a class. Students
will be reminded of how their first unit test will work next class.

Reflection

This lesson went extremely well. I think that it benefited students to practice studying for
their unit test. Students enjoyed this lesson and started to have fun in math. When math
can be viewed as fun, students will be more willing to study. It won’t feel as much like a
chore.
The only bad thing is there was not enough time to go through all of the math questions
on bingo. I think the estimating game would have been beneficial during the lesson of
when estimating fractions was taught. Then we could have still done the estimating of the
square root game but I wouldn’t have had to waste time explaining how to do it. Then
there would have been more time for the Bingo review!
