Objective: To observe and verify the elements of motion along the straight line.
Background :
Linear motion is the motion a straight line and the movement in a direction where forwards is
positive and backwards is negative.
Displacement , ∆x is distance traveled in a particular direction.
Displacement , ∆x = final position – initial position = x2 – x1
Speed is the rate of change of distance.
Speed = distance travelled/time taken
Average speed = total distance traveled / total time taken
Average velocity = total displacement / total time taken
Vave.= s / t eqn. 1
Average velocity is also the average of initial and final velocities.
v i +v f
Vave = eqn.2

Solving equations (1) and(2) simultaneously
s v i +v f

Acceleration is defined as the change in velocity per unit time
v f −v 1
a= ; v f =v i +at eqn.(4)

Solving eqn. (3) and (4) simultaneously we get

2s = 2 v i t + at 2

S = v i t+ at 2
2
Newton’s second law of motion states that an unbalanced force applied to a mass produces
acceleration to the equation
F
a=
m

Procedure:
1. Open the website indicated above and click motion.
2. Click the ff. boxes in the upper right corner: force, values, masses and speed.
3. Drag the girl to the cart and record her mass. Set the applied force to 10N by clicking the arrow
right.
4. Prepare your phone or any timer and open the stop watch.
5. Start the simulation by clicking the speedometer arrow right icon (play icon below the green
box) simultaneously with the stop watch.
6. Pause the stopwatch together with the speedometer as the speed reaches 5.0 m/s.
7. Record the time.
8. Repeat the same procedure using different masses.

9. Calculate the acceleration using the formula, a =
m
10. Calculate the velocity using the formula, v = a ∆ t
