Guidance Notes

Speaking & Listening

Standard Jamaican English, which is the target language, must be used during assessment.
In order to enable students to be confident language users, we encourage a bilingual classroom where
students may use Jamaican Creole (JC) and Standard Jamaican English (SJE). In so doing, we are
encouraging students to understand context. We want students to be equally fluent in SJE and JC.

x The Speaking & Listening element will be internally assessed and quality assured.
x Each activity can be assessed on different occasions.
x The candidate should be given a week, prior to the assessment, to prepare for the presentation
(Activity 1).
x The presentation should take about 3-4 minutes with additional time allowed for questions.
x Candidates should not be penalised for spelling, punctuation or grammar errors on the
evaluation form.
x An audio file/recording is provided at Stage 3 for the listening activity (Activity 2). This is
password protected and can be downloaded from www.cityandguilds.com
x Candidates can listen to the complete recording for the listening activity (Activity 2) up to three
times without pausing.
x If unsuccessful at a first attempt (after listening three times), candidates may retake the listening
comprehension activity during the designated resit period with a different transcript.
x Candidates may take notes and answer questions at any time during the listening
comprehension activity. Any notes made must not leave the examination room.
x There is a minimum duration required of at least 5 minutes for the discussion activity (Activity 3).
x The candidate can have a maximum of 30 minutes to prepare for the discussion.
x There will be a small bank of discussion/presentation topics to choose from.
x The groups for the discussion will consist of at least three and no more than five candidates.
x Candidates should not be penalised for spelling, punctuation or grammar errors during the
speaking and listening activities.

The Speaking & Listening examiner will:

x be fully conversant with the Speaking & Listening activities and the Assessment Record before
conducting the test
x enter marks on the Assessment Record for Activities 1, 2 and 3.

How to conduct the assessment for Activity 1

The examiner oversees the whole assessment process and allocates marks on the Assessment Record.
Candidate A gives their presentation.
Candidate B completes the evaluation form and gives it to Candidate A.
Candidate A reads the evaluation and completes the reflection form.
Candidates A and B discuss the evaluation and both forms are given to the examiner.

Assessment Record
The Assessment Record is a mark scheme and a record of the marks achieved.
The marking scale provides the number of marks that the candidate can achieve for each criterion.

Full marks demonstrates the candidate meets the criteria consistently at the level.

Most of the time demonstrates consistency at the level with occasional lapses.

Zero marks demonstrates the candidate has not met the required standard at the level.

Examiner Record Sheet

The Examiner Record Sheet provides the assessor with the opportunity to record examples of how
candidates have met the criteria for the presentation and discussion.

Examiner Comments
The Examiner Comments box should be used to provide a record of a candidate’s overall performance.

Recording for Activity 2 – Listening

Jamila Good afternoon and welcome to our ‘Employment Today’ programme where our live studio
audience will be given advice on preparing for an interview by, our guest, Kelsey Daniels, the Human
Resource Director for a major recruitment agency in Kingston.

We all think that we know what we should do in readiness for that important event, but do we? Let’s
hear what Kelsey has to say.
Kelsey Thank you Jamila, it’s good to be joining you today and I hope that I’ll be able to help your audience
move a step closer to their first rung on the career ladder or their next job move.

This probably sounds a little obvious but finding your way to an interview can be a traumatic
experience, especially, if you haven’t been to that area before on your own. Looking up directions
on a map or checking out the location on the internet is pretty important. Too often candidates are
late for their interview, as they couldn’t find where they should be, then when they do eventually
arrive they’re flustered and find it difficult to think clearly for at least the first few minutes.

Punctuality can have a real impact on the outcome of an interview. If it’s possible visit the place
where the interview will be, before the day. This will help with timing and reduce the likelihood of
nerves over something going wrong on the way there. See how long your journey takes and then
add on time for circumstances beyond your control. It’s also worth finding out alternative means of
transport should something go wrong with your car, the buses, taxis etc.

Before the day read the job advertisement again to make sure you haven’t missed anything that they
may ask you or you need to take with you. This will also help you think of questions that you may
want to ask them too. Having a couple of questions ready shows your interest in the job.

If you do feel nervous, and let’s face it most people do, practice deep, slow breathing, which helps
to slow the heart rate down to let you talk normally. Employers will understand that you are nervous
but within the first three minutes of the interview they will be starting to form their opinions of you,
so make sure they are good ones!

The main piece of advice I give to anyone who has signed on with my company is that when they are
preparing for an interview they should compile a list of actions then tick off each item as it is
completed. That way you’ll know you have covered everything, which in turn will help to boost your
confidence.

I hope that these few tips will help you in your preparations and good luck.
Jamila Kelsey, thank you for joining the show today. I’m sure that you’ll have helped many of our audience
and I know that you are happy to answer any questions.
So, ladies and gentleman do you have any questions for Kelsey?
