Lesson Summary

Speak Up and Lead | Course Introduction

Introduction
In this course, we will discuss what it means to be a leader and what separates true leaders from everyone
else. True leadership is about speaking up for what you believe in, taking ownership, and focusing on getting
the right outcomes - especially in the face of a challenge.

In this course we will walk through a values framework to help you make the right decisions as a leader. This
course is structured into 4 lessons.

In the first lesson, we discuss the meaning of leadership. We define true leadership as “being proactive
in the face of a challenge” and look at how you can use your values as a compass when making
decisions.

In lesson 2, we learn how to construct leadership stories that demonstrate your values so that you can
connect with and motivate your team. We look at why storytelling is such a great tool for
communicating values and learn three key components of creating leadership stories i.e. challenge,
choice and consequence.

In lesson 3, we explore different scenarios in which you can use a leadership story and how to develop
and tell the story so that it’s both engaging and inspiring. By telling an engaging story that resonates
with your team, they are more likely to feel connected to you, learn from your experiences and be
inspired to act.

Finally, in lesson 4, we learn how we can inspire and help the people that we lead to be proactive in the
face of a challenge and take ownership of their tasks based on their values, by creating the space for
them to speak up and lead.

This course is designed for anyone who wants to step into leadership, gain more confidence to tell their story,
inspire others and create space for other people to speak up and lead.

Throughout the course we will refer to the fictional case of Rosine who works at Rusha restaurant and events
catering company.

Next steps
1) COMPLETING THE PRE-ASSESSMENT
After watching the introduction video, the next step is to attempt the pre-assessment. This provides you with
a baseline of what you know coming into the course and will help you see how you improve as you go through
the course. The pre-assessment is not graded, but it is mandatory.

2) MEETING YOUR BUDDY

Once you have enrolled in the course and watched the Introduction video, you will need to get in touch with
your course buddy. The emails you will have received (the course introduction and the course registration
emails) explain how to add a buddy. Please review them for detailed instructions.
A buddy is someone who can hold you accountable as you take this course, someone you can discuss the
challenging content with, and someone who will be able to help you work through your final assignment.

Your buddy will be your sounding board. You will discuss with him/her the concepts that you cover on the
course and how to apply them at work. Your buddy will also review your final assignment and report to validate
that you’ve actually gone through the course successfully.

You can find more detail on course buddies in the course registration email you received or on our FAQs page.

3) GETTING STARTED!
Once you’ve registered your buddy and completed the pre-assessment you are ready to start the first lesson!

Assessments
Each lesson will consist of a video, a quiz and an activity. All of the quizzes together account for 20% of your
final grade. The activities will not be graded, but you are encouraged to take them to enhance your learning.

At the end of the course, you’ll be required to attempt the final exam and final assignment found in the course
conclusion section of the course (the final exam and final assignment each account for 40% of your final
grade).

If you are still unsure about how the course works, please check the email you received when you signed up.
