Unit 1
Introduction

The safety of personnel is one of the most important variables to consider when running a workshop. It
is for these reasons that safety procedures exist. There are multiple impacts that unsafe working
conditions can have on a company, industry, and its employees. Clients, employees, the company’s
stature, and its profits are what a company stands to risk if there aren’t proper safety precautions
implemented and practiced in the workplace. Zarrilli (2018) add that the company is responsible for
educating its employees on the safety precautions to adhere to in the workplace which if failed to do so,
may lead to accidents, injuries, and possibly fatalities.

There are many different types of accidents in the workplace that can be categorized into 5 categories.

These categories are

near accidents which have no injuries or damage,

a trivial accident which has very little damage and/injury,

minor accident which results in moderate injuries and damage,

Serious accident which results in heavy injuries and damage, and lastly

Fatal accident that results in very serious/fatal injuries and damage.

The most common causes of accidents are stress, violence in the workplace, poor lighting, fatigue, trips
and falls, dehydration, lifting, and hazardous materials. Some of the benefits of implementing safety in
the workplace include productivity, which essentially tells us that people are more productive in a safe
environment and that is an asset that a workshop would need. There is more efficient work done when
both employees and employers are healthy, and safety in the workplace can help promote wellness in
the workplace. Another major factor that a workshop can benefit from implementing safety, is saving a
lot of money from lawsuits, repairs, and employee compensation (Ahmed, 2021). Once an accident
occurs due to poor or inadequate safety implementations, the employee could sue the company for
compensation for the injury and the company would need money to repair any damage done to
machinery, the building, and tools. Implementing safety precautions help avoid the occurrence of this.
There are government laws in place that ensure the safety of persons in the workplace. The
‘Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993’ is aimed at providing healthy and safe conditions for
people in a workplace as the two are connected to the use of machinery and the

Workshop is characterized by a high existence of many potential hazards that can easily

inflict occupational injuries among workers. Recent years have witnessed the link between the
concepts of safety climate with variety of safety outcomes including accidents and injuries .Yet,

safety climate measures are rarely addressed.

1.1.AMT Workshop Safety

Technicians (AMT's) workshop is one of the fully Equipped Workshop in the entire aviation academy.
The workshop building is mainly divided in to three (3) main areas or boundaries, these includes:-
A workshop practice area
A Laboratory (Instrumental lab...) and
A Laboratory Equipment inventory store
1.2.The parts of AMT workshop
A. Workshop practice area
* These working area or place is located on the entire ground floor. * This area covers majority of spaces
on the ground floor.
It is the widest area where students practice "Basic Workshop practice course for a period of 3-4 weeks.

It consists of
Working tables and chairs
Clamps
Overhead gas pipes
machines ( mining, drilling and cutting machines)
Safety equipment’s
dressing room
B. Laboratory (instrument lab...)
• These rooms Consists of
• Computers with integrated NIDA equipment Simulating equipment’s and Samples.
* These laboratories are found on most part of the located building and are located on the second and
third (lab) floor. This rooms are used for NIDA practice and Simulating Equipment’s, and sampler
Experimentation on given guideline or module.
C. Laboratory Equipment and inventory store
* These stores are the most crucial part of the workshop since they are used for workshop inventory
storage. They are specifically located on the ground floor (there are about '4' main Equipment stores
without Considering Separate Equipment lockers found at each laboratory).

1. workshop practice area
* Safety Equipments mainly CO₂ fire extinguishers (ie, co₂ for class A, B,C) are mainly located on each
corners including on the Wall.
* two co₂ fire extinguisher and two water fire extinguisher are found on the ground floor.
2. Laboratory (Instrument Laboratory)
* Four fire extinguisher per laboratory i n the wall is installed and two water fire extinguisher and one
co₂ fire extinguisher in the ground.

3. Laboratory Equipment inventory store

* One CO₂ fire extinguisher per laboratory is installed on the Wall.
note. Bigger/ large co₂ fire extinguisher is installed on its Specific boundary on the ground.
* The remaining co₂ fire extinguishers are hanged or installed on the Wall.
* Safety Symbols (ie, Emergency escape sign) are installed on each floor.

Safety rules of the workshop

To ensure that people are safe in a workshop, rules must be implemented, and the workers

educated on and constantly reminded of these rules. One of the best ways to remind people of

the safety rules is to remind them every time they entire the workshop. This can be properly

by posting the safety rules on the entrance of the door to the workshop. Some may also post

these rules all over the walls inside the workshop to try and remind the workers or students in

the case that they unintentionally disregard the rules.

Some of the most common rules to post and create awareness in the workplace would be to

know the location of all fire prevention equipment and the know-how to use them. If the

person does not know how to use them, then someone who knows how to use them should be
5occasionally around. Similarly, know the location of all the emergency exits in case of fire

emergencies. Practice good housekeeping and ensure the workshop is always clean and tidy.
Personal Protective Equipment should always be worn when working in the laboratory. Make

sure that all the equipment/machinery is fitted with guards before operating them. No

horseplay in the workshop is to be tolerated. All equipment should be used for which they

were created. Avoid wearing jewelry, loose hair, or loose clothing in the workshop. If any are

present, they should either be removed or secured from entanglement. No use of cellphones

or earphones should be allowed in the workshop. Ensure that all equipment are occasionally

inspected for wear or deterioration and that they are properly maintained and serviced to

prevent hazardous situations. Before using equipment or machinery, identify potential

hazards and clear them to prevent any potential harm or damage. Minimize the number of

students and/or employees working in a particular working area. Always remember and

follow workshop rules and work at safe speeds. The last and important rule for students to

follow that is not occasionally practiced is, ask for help where you do not know or understand

how to operate certain machinery and do not touch equipment unless permission has been
granted. 7

Emergency and safety signs in the AMT workshop

At the entrance of the workshop there is emergency sign on green background and white pictorial.which
indicates the exit sign.and also there is water fire extinguisher on the enterance ,there is also emergency
center informations on the entrance
Next to the entrance there is the ground
floor AMT workshop practice area .on this
floor there are fire extinguishers .

Next to the practice are there is

The above sign (Figure 15) serves as an emergency sign. This sign indicates a designated

assembly point. Assembly points are usually locations where people meet when evacuating a

burning building. This sign is normally situated outside a building and is most times use in a

fire hazard. This sign is however used in emergency situations. 13

Unit 3

Unsafe conditions

Unsafe conditions or environment

Unsafe conditions are conductions that may potentially cause harm to an employee or student

in the workplace. Examples of these unsafe conditions include defective equipment, poor

guarding, poor lighting, loud noises, and poor housekeeping. 16

The image above depicts multiple hazardous conditions and acts, for example, horseplay in

the workshop, improper housekeeping, and unsafe acts such as socializing in a workshop

where the person's attention should be drawn to the machinery he is working with. These are

some of the most dangerous unsafe conditions and acts in a workshop. Emuze (2017) stated 16

the workers/employee's improper use of equipment, tools, and plants or the management/the
employer’s actions to force workers to heights or projects
without proper PPE is a factor that

may cause unsafe working conditions.

However, there are more common unsafe conditions that one may encounter in a workshop.

The most common unsafe condition that an individual may encounter among students is the

operation of equipment improperly. This is due to the lack of experience in using such

equipment. Poor housekeeping is also an unsafe condition that students tend to ignore. Poor

housekeeping can limit the working space or create potentially hazardous situations (Lihanda,

2019).h 17

1.first aid instruments and accessories

First aid packages ,accessories and instruments need to be provided at every place of the workshop and
it is important to prepare it at visible places

2.house keeping problems

At some areas specially on the first floor and second floor back entrance and exist some
mismanagement of dirty ,objects, debris is visible so this need to be corrected

3.some electrical hazards

Some electrical wires are not correctly covered during finishing and maintenance this will result in some
accidents for persons.then this need to be corrected

4.closed doors
The exist doors at the first floor and at the second floor which means at instrument lab inventory lab are
locked this means they are not giving their own purpose.emergency exist doors will simplify the
evacuation of persons during some accidents then those doors need to be opened

Unit 4
Conclusion

AMT workshop at the Ethiopian aviation University are regularly applying safety rules. They are

also taught about the safety measures to adhere to when working in a workshop. There are

safety signs all around the building and roms as specified in the above extract. Most of the safety rules
and emergency protection devices are adhered to by workshops and the personnels make sure that all
stakeholders adhere to these rules.

In conclusion it is safe to say that the workshops at the Ethiopian aviation university are safe. But some
things are needed to be corrected according to the observation.this conditions may be forgotten
unintentionally in the workshop as imdicated in unit three.some of them are emergency exist doors
being locked, shortage of first aid equipments, some lose electrical wires on the walls and floor,

If safety procedures in a workshop are implemented, there is a given assurance of the

Trainees and instructors well-being alike. Implementing and following health and safety

procedures in the workplace ensures the safety and good health of all staff while also

improving the working conditions in the workplace and reducing medical and maintenance costs.

The consequences of not implementing safety in the workplace though, has opposite

consequences compared to when implemented. It can result in a decline in production due to

absent staff due to sickness or injury, which the workshop stakeholders must pay for. If there are any

identifiable damages to workshop equipment, the workshop will have to repair these

equipments or machinery. There could also be a law suit against the workshop for not taking

care of its trainees health and safety rights. 21
