Course Outline

1. Course title:
Climate Resilience -Smart Soil and Water Management: Solutions for
Sustainable Agriculture and Environment

2. Duration: 2 weeks
This course takes place online over 2 weeks via real-time lectures, Virtual workshop and
study tour and guided self-study.

3. Background

The Faculty of Agriculture was established in 1964. The responsibilities of the Faculty of
Agriculture at that time were not only to be a resource of knowledge for students in various disciplines
of agriculture but also to be a resource for contributing knowledge in agriculture in order to solve
agricultural problems for the country as a whole. This included the search for new technologies in
agriculture for the development and progress in the agricultural profession and the prosperity of Thai
society. From the beginning of the establishment until today, the Faculty of Agriculture has provided
experienced lecturers, relevant and up-to-date technology, and equipment and textbooks in teaching and
research for students and farmers in the region.
Moreover, the Faculty of Agriculture is responsible for coordinating both introductory and
specialized training courses in a number of subject areas, including sustainable crop production,
integrated pest management, dairy and beef cattle production technology, molecular techniques in
agricultural biotechnology, and research and technology development for sustainable land management,
tropical feed resource, area analysis of agricultural planning, sustainable agriculture and food security,
utilizing indigenous food resources for food security, Utilizing Indigenous Food Resources for Food
Security, Sustainable Animal Production and Resource Management for Sustainable Agriculture and
Food Safety and Moving Local Agricultural Products from Self-Sufficiency Production and Household
Consumption to Market by “Sufficiency Economy” Approach, etc.
Agriculture plays an essential role in feeding a world population as well as providing
diverse products like food, fiber, ecosystem and cultural services and supporting millions of
livelihoods in rural areas. Agriculture is the most susceptible sector and is greatly influenced by
climate change and climate variability. With rising temperature and changes in precipitation pattern
due to climate change, it is likely to have serious implications on land and water resources
availability and thereby affecting agriculture. Agricultural production will be increasingly
impacted, due to the sensitivity of crops, livestock, and fisheries to changes in temperature and
water availability, as well as extreme weather events. As a result, specifically in developing
countries, agricultural production is likely to decrease leading to more food insecurity. The
interaction between climate change and agriculture is bidirectional: unsustainable agricultural
practices degrade landscapes and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.

To mitigate these negative impacts on the environment and human well-being, agriculture
will need to adopt sustainable, climate-smart land water and agricultural practices. These practices,
along with agricultural intensification, will play a critical role in mitigating the adverse effects of
climate change by reducing emissions while also raising yields and improving livelihoods.
Climate Change is a global phenomenon, but its effects are felt regionally and locally. It is
one of the most complicated scientific problems, in addition with the severally uncertainties about
the future. Climate is the main component that control hydrological cycle. When the future climate
is changed, it is altered stream water levels and groundwater level and recharge, discharge, storage,
saltwater intrusion, salinity distribution, chemical fate and transport, and its consequence impacts
on natural ecosystems, livelihoods as well human and environmental health. Adaptation to climate
change is mainly about progressive soil and water management. Appropriate adaptation measures
build upon known land and water management practices to foster resilience to future climate
change, thereby enhancing water security and food security.
Therefore, the training course on Climate Resilience -Smart Soil and Water Management:
Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture and Environment aims to facilitate the exchange of
information and knowledge among soil, water and environment professionals from developed and
developing countries to advance the understanding, collaboration and capabilities to respond to the
impact of climate change in a rapidly changing global environment. It will also draw on lessons
learnt, current status, with a focus on new development of land and water management to enhance
the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises that impact agriculture and food security from
climate change

4. Objectives:
The program is designed to share Thailand’s knowledge and experiences in Climate
Resilience - Smart Soil and Water Management: Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture and
Environment.

This course is aimed at empowering the participants with the necessary skills,
information, and knowledge on the important of soil health, soil quality monitoring and
integrated soil fertility management, climate change's impact on Soil and water resources and
