BACKGROUND AND HISTORY OF THE TOWN

 Founded in 1783 under the administration of secular clergymen,
Siquijor became the first municipality as well as the first parish
to be established on the island under the Cebu Diocese. On
January 19, 1892, the island was joined to the province of
Negros Oriental through Decree of Union by Governor General
Weyler.

 The town of San Juan used to be called Makalipay and once

ruled by a local chieftain that goes by the name of Datu Capilay.
When the Spaniards came, they named the place in honor of
Saint John the Baptist probably because of the presence of a
spring in the middle of town. Since then, the town has been
known as San Juan. Yet unlike many towns named San Juan in
the Philippines with Saint John as patron saint, San
Juan's patron saint is Saint Augustine of Hippo.
NOTABLE PLACES TO VISIT

CAPILAY SPRING PARK

 It has a long spring pool located at the center of the park where
residents love to plunge especially during summer. Beside the
pool are the benches and trees that gives good shade from the
blazing sun. Tourists may just visit the place to have some brief
sights of the park but residents do love to go here and stroll in
the afternoon.

PALITON BEACH
 Paliton Beach is another secluded white sand beach in Siquijor
known as the “Little Boracay” of the province. Many would say
that of all the beaches in the province, this one is the best. The
shore is being line with coconut trees and the sea water is crystal
clear. The beach also gives a panoramic view to the nearby
Negros and Apo Island and a romantic sight of sunset.

Lugnason Falls

 is a small falls where its waters cascade from a limestone

cliff that plunges into a basin of cold and refreshing waters.
Nature lovers will surely love to spend more time here
given the relaxing ambiance of the location. The basin is
good enough for swimming or one can jump from a cliff
into the basin
GASTRONOMY

BUDDHA BOWL

households, where they prepare their fresh catch in
sugba(grilled), tula (soup), and kilawin (ceviche) ways of
cooking.
FESTIVAL

Bugwas festival

 is San Juan’s way of celebrating a bountiful and abundant

harvest in honor of their patron saint, St. Augustine.
Bugwas means a spurt of water coming from an
underground source, which flows freely in the open
ground. Since San Juan is blessed with abundant spring
waters, these waters give the farmers bountiful harvest, the
fisher folk with an abundant catch and making and making
the life of the people of San Juan happier and fruitful
because of a good and bountiful harvest.
Way of life and Economy

 Siquijor is known throughout the country for its unique

healing arts. Its centuries old tradition of concocting local
potions is still being practiced and used as alternative
medicine. Every year, traditional healers would gather in the
island to “renew” their connection with nature and put together
a fresh brew of local potion.
 The island is a serene place ideal for those who want to get-
away from the hustle and bustle of city living.
 Since Siquijor is the capital of the island province of Siquijor,
the main economy and livelihood is tourism. Farming, bakery,
basket weaving, banana production and crafts making are
some of the other industrial livelihood found the municipality
of Siquijor.
