DENSITY

• property of an object or material, calculated as density=

units g/

• mass per unit volume of a substance

• It tells us how tightly packed the particles ( such as atoms

molecules etc. ) are within a substance

• The more space b/w particles, the less denser

• does not depend on the quantity/shape/size,

• it depends on the material.

→ Same material, same density

Examples:

- A very large block of polystyrene may have a larger mass than a

small piece of metal

- Polystyrene food containers feel very light as they have a large

volume and small mass. The containers are also hollow, meaning that
they have a space filled with air inside them

- Nails feel heavy because they have a high mass and small volume.
Nails are also solid (no space with air inside, opposite of hollow)

- The same volume of iron has a larger mass than the same volume
of polystyrene

→ Density is used to describe this difference

S.I unit of density is : Kg/

Physics Page 1
• S.I unit of density is : Kg/
-
- Kilograms per cubic meter

• Because the density is mass divided by volume, the unit of density is

the unit of mass, divided by the unit of volume
→ Example:
→ If mass is in g and volume is in
g/

• Density: typically measured In units like kilogram per cubic meter
