Activity No. 4
Tractor Sizing

I. OBJECTIVES

1. Familiarize common tractor brands and its specifications.

2. Apply the methodology in tractor sizing.

II. DIRECTIONS
1. Given the farm situation and requirement. Recommend a 4-wheel agricultural tractor
best suited for the specified work and field condition. You are encouraged to produce
outputs with quality.
2. With reference the attached models and brands of agricultural tractors, select the
appropriate brands and models appropriate for work and field condition based on the
tractor size (engine gross power) . Attach the tractor catalogue of your choice.
3. Do the calculation systematically on a short bondpaper, type-or hand-written, font type:
aerial, font size: 12. Note: For hand-written work, please write legibly/clearly and in
engineering way.
4. Observe proper format (margin, spacing, etc)
5. Submit your output to GClassroom in one pdf document only following the file format:
Given Name_Family Name_Activity Number

III. PROBLEM

1. Estimate the draft requirement, the drawbar horsepower and the tractor size for an
plowing operation using a disc plow, 25.98 in [66 cm] diameter, with a furrow width of 9
inches (disc spacing), a depth of cut of 12.2 in [30.99 cm], with 6 bottoms (no. of discs).
The type of soil is moist silt loam with a specific unit draft of 5psi and working at an
average speed of travel 3.73 mph [6 kph]. Estimate the tractor size (Engine Gross power)
by multiplying a factor 1.25 to the computed drawbar power.
2

Hint: Understand the design concept as discussed and illustrated in our example.
