A1-A2 Speaking Exam: Speaking Prompts

Introduction & Greeting:


How are you feeling today? Nervous? It’s okay. We are just going to chit-chat. So, no big deal.
Can you tell me how your course was? Did you enjoy, like it and have fun?

Interview:
Option 1: Friendship
Who is your best friend? What’s his/her name?
Why is he/she your best friend? (personal adjectives)
What is his/her the best personal trait? Do you also have the same trait?
Let’s say you want to change one negative trait about your bestie,
can you tell me what it is? (personal adjectives)
What do you do when you are together? (Simple present)

Option 2: Favourite Activities


A. Which places would you like to travel? Why do you want to visit these places. (Future plans)
Where do you go when you go out? Where is your favourite food or drink place?
Let’s say my friend is coming to Van. Where can we go together? (Can, could)
Why? Is it good, expensive, cheap, fun… etc.

B. Can you tell me your typical day? What do you do?


Do you spend too much time at home? What do you do when you’re home?
Can you tell me what you have at your home / in your room? (There is-are)
How many people are living with you? Who are they?
Do you usually eat at home or out? Why?

C. Can you talk about your best holiday? (past tense)


What did you do?
Who were there with you on that holiday?
Was there anything bad or something you did not like that much?
When did you go that holiday?
Was it expensive for you?

Option 3: Education & Work:


Do you work or study? – Where do you work / where do you study?
Do you like your job & department?
What is the best thing about it? Money, or else?
Let’s say you want to change your job & department, what would you
choose?
Why do you want to change it? / Why don’t you want to
change it?
Can you tell me your typical day at school & work?
Guidance:
 In order to keep the assessment standardized among all classes and students, please try to stick
to the prompt & planner.

 You can alter the questions to something you find more useful or something that you reckon that
fits the examinee better.

 The speaking exam must take five minutes minimum and eight maximum. So, you can choose
one of three options to commence the exam.

 But, if the examinee is stuck or has nothing to say more, you can always skip to other options or
alternatives swiftly to keep the atmosphere up and running.

 Or if you see fit, you can also alternate the questions based on the personality of the examinee
that you know in person.

 You can also scaffold a student if he/she stuck in the middle of conversation to keep them calm
and focused.
