ERHARD Diaphragm valves are versatile industrial valves for cutting off and controlling
of liquids, gases and mushy materials for pressures from technical vacuum up to 10 bar
operating over pressure and for a temperature range from –20° C up to +120° C.
At hot media there is a risk of burning, the valve must be heat insulated at site.

ERHARD Diaphragm valves consist of three main components: the body, the
diaphragm and the cover with actuator elements. Only two components of these, that is
the body and the diaphragm do not get in touch with the operation medium. The
diaphragm separates the actuator parts from the operation medium. The valves are
“without gland seal“. The diaphragm is clamped between body and cover and can be
easily exchanged without the need to dismantle the valve from the pipeline. The
diaphragm is anchored in the pressure part (depending on size and design by an
adapted rubber knob, screw or bayonet).
In the cover head there is a tapped bushing, which bears the non-rising handwheel. By
rotating the handwheel a stem stroke movement will be initiated. The elongated stem

pivot serves for position indication and also by means of two counter nuts for stroke
limitation.
Design type BG
This is a valve type “B“ with additional safety sealing in the area of the stem bushing.
Due to this sealing escape of the operation medium will be prevented in case of
diaphragm break.
Diaphragm valves are resistant against all media due to material, lining and diaphragm
combination (exception: potassium and sodium in melted condition), see also
BA01D001.
The valve is actuated by means of the handwheel. Do not use excessive force.
The valve can be retrofitted by means of the suitable accessories with chain wheel or
stem cover, respectively, (stem extension).
Operation media temperature limit values may not be exceeded. Operation above
pressure limit values may not be exceeded. A closed valve may only be loaded up to
the nominal pressure. The pressure/temperature limit values must be observed.
Remove all packing material from the valve. Prior to installation, check the pipeline for
impurities and foreign bodies and clean it if necessary.
Care must be taken to allow access to the valve from all sides for operation. At
installation in the open the valve must be protected at site against direct influence of the
weather.
During installation of the valve the distance between the pipeline flanges should be
minimum 20 mm above the total length of the valve, in order not to damage the work
strips and allow inserting the gaskets. As flange gaskets steel reinforced rubber gaskets
are recommended, at slip-on flanges this is imperative (media and temperature
compatibility must be observed).
The connection bolts should be fixed equally (without tension) crosswise. The pipeline
mustn’t by any means be pulled up to the valve.
For aggressive media the media resistant flat gaskets must be used according to DIN
2690.
After installation, check valve for smooth operation: move the valve at the handwheel
over the total travel (OPEN-CLOSED). (Closes in clockwise direction).
● the tightness between body cover flange and diaphragm, tighten cover
screws and nuts, if required.
1.10 Safety
At toxic or burning media wear protective cloths (safety goggles). Moreover for those
media the valve design with safety sealing, e.g. type “BG“ product no. 73000772 must
be selected.
At usage of the diaphragm valves in hot water systems with temperature variations in
larger time intervals shrinkage of the elastomer diaphragms must be expected due to
material characteristics in the clamping area of the body cover flanges. A re-tightening
of the cover screws may become necessary. If those system parts are equipped with
heat insulating material it must be separated in the area of body cover flange in a way,
that these bolt connections are accessible for maintenance works.
1.11 Transport
Lifting with tools using the flange bores of the valve is inadmissible, since that may
damage the corrosion protection.
Warning
Weight of MV:
The MV should be transported by means of straps, which are wrapped around both
flange necks and hanged to the lifting device.
2 Maintenance
2.1 Maintenance
ERHARD Diaphragm valves are mostly maintenance free. At the type with lubricant
nipple at the cover neck it must be lubricated in regular intervals (depending on ambient
influences).
At operation medium water or silicon free types the recommended lubricant is Klüber
Synth VR 69-252.
WARNING
Prior to starting the maintenance works all
pressurized lines must be made pressure less
and secured against re-starting!
After finishing the maintenance works all
connections must be checked on leakage and
tightness.
Warning
DANGER
If dangerous liquids, material, gases and vapours are
escaping, the plant must be shut off immediately, the
responsible supervisor must be notified and appropriate
repair works must be performed.
The personal protective equipment according to the
Dange regulation of the Professional Association must be used.
r Depending on the operation medium there is the danger of
poisoning, burning, scalding. as well as fire and explosion
danger by biological and micro biological materials!
2.2 Inspection
Check outer condition of the valve. Clean if required and repair coating. Check tightness
at the pipe connections, e.g. flanges. Check smooth run of the valve. Move manually
over the complete stroke. Check tightness at the end seal: move valve to closed
position. Check pressure drop downstream and upstream of the valve.
Rubber products should be cleaned with warm water. After a storage period from 6 up
to 8 months it is recommended to clean them prior to installation with a 1.5% sodium
carbonate solvent and rinsing with water. The cleaned diaphragms may not be dried on
a radiator.
— Possible causes of leakage in the end seal: decrease of pre-tension force in the
elastomer of the diaphragm
Removing at valves of type ‘B“: The required contact pressure of the diaphragm
can be adjusted by the stroke limit. The valve can only be closed so far until the
lower counter nut clings to the hand wheel cove. If the position of the counter
nuts will be changed towards “larger valve stroke“, the contact pressure of the
diaphragm will be increased.
The diaphragms can be exchanged without dismantling the valve from the pipeline.
Unscrew cover bolts crosswise and lift top from body. By moving back and forth the
adhesive between body cover flange and diaphragm will be removed. Should it be
impossible to remove the top the valve should be moved by means of the handwheel in
closing direction, which lifts the cover and allows removal together with the diaphragm.
