SAMPLE PROBLEMS
1. The power transmitted by the shaft of a dc motor is 20 hp at 640 rpm. Determine the useful
torque exerted by the motor.
2𝜋𝑁𝑇
𝐻𝑃 =
44760
2𝜋(640)𝑇
20 =
44760
𝑇 = 222.62 𝑁 ∙ 𝑚
2. A 4-pole dc shunt motor, lap-wound armature has 650 conductors. The flux per pole is 30 mWb.
Calculate the armature torque when the armature current is 40 A.
𝜑𝑃𝑍𝐼𝐴
𝑇=
2𝜋𝑎
(30𝑥10−3 )4(650)](40)
𝑇=
2𝜋(4𝑥1)
𝑇 = 124.14 𝑁 ∙ 𝑚
3. A separately excited dc motor develops 200 N-m torque at a given flux while drawing 20 A
current. If the flux is adjusted to increase by 20% while the motor draws 50A current, the torque
developed will become ________.

4. A 250 V series motor in which the total armature and field resistance is 0.15 ohm is working with
unsaturated field taking 120 A and running at 750 rpm. Calculate at what speed the motor will
run when developing half the torque.

5. A 400 V shunt motor takes an armature current of 120 A and runs at 1000 rpm. The armature
resistance is 0.2 ohm. Calculate the speed with the same torque if magnetic flux is reduced to
80% of the initial.

6. A 115-V, dc motor has an armature resistance of 0.2 ohm. If the full load armature current is 75
A, find the starting resistance needed to limit the armature current to 150% of the full load
value. Allow a brush contact drop of 2V.
