DEPARTMENT OF CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Nirnay 80.0 - Thyroid Panel Basic 1

Test Name Value Unit Bio Ref.Interval

Tri-Iodothyronine Total (T3)* 0.53 ng/mL 0.69 – 2.15

(Method:CLIA ) (Sample:Serum)
Comments: Triiodothyronine (T3) is one of two major hormones produced by the thyroid gland, a small butterfly-shaped organ that lies flat across the windpipe at the
base of the throat. The other major thyroid hormone is called thyroxine (T4) and together they help control the rate at which the body uses energy. Almost all of the T3
(and T4) found in the blood is bound to protein. The rest is free (unbound) and is the biologically active form of the hormone. Tests can measure the amount of free T3 or
the total T3 (bound plus unbound) in the blood. Most of the hormone produced by the thyroid is T4. This hormone is relatively inactive, but it is converted into the much
more active T3 in the liver and other tissues.

Thyroxine - Total (T4)* 1.37 µg/dL 5.2 – 12.7

(Method:CLIA) (Sample:Serum)
Comments: T4, also known as thyroxine, which is produced by the thyroid gland and helps control metabolism and growth. The T4 test is performed as part of an evaluation of thyroid function.

Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)* >250 µIU/mL 0.3-4.5

(Method:CLIA) (Sample:Serum) First Trimester : 0.1-2.5
Second Trimester : 0.2-3.0
Third trimester : 0.3-3.0
Children <1 years: <10.0
Comments: TSH results between 4.5 to 15 show considerable physiologic & seasonal variation, suggest clinical correlation or repeat testing with fresh sample.
TSH results between 0.1 to 4.5 require correlation with patient age & clinical symptoms. As with increasing age, there are marked changes in thyroid hormone production, metabolism & its
actions resulting in an increased prevalence of subclinical thyroid disease.
TSH values may be transiently altered because of non thyroidal illness like severe infections, liver disease, renal and heart failure, severe burns, trauma and surgery etc.
Drugs that decrease TSH values e.g: L-dopa, Glucocorticoid Drugs that increase TSH values e.g Iodine, Lithium, Amiodarone.

Note: Patients on Biotin supplement may have interference in some immunoassays. With individuals taking high dose Biotin (more than 5 mg per day) supplements, at least 8-hour wait time
before blood draw is recommended.
