Day in the life of the Land Girl

Often when I’m working out and about at Newhouse Farm I find myself comparing my current lifestyle
to the lifestyle I used to lead in the city, and realising just how totally different they are. Not that long ago I
used to work in a busy office in the centre of London, surrounded by the noise of telephones ringing,
keyboards clattering, and the chaotic rumble of the traffic from outside the window. Since I’ve moved to
Cornwall I’m still surrounded by noises, but now when I’m farming I hear chickens clucking, ducks quacking,
geese honking and wind turbines whirring.

I thought it would be interesting to compare my Newhouse Farm daily routine with the routine I used
to lead in London. There’s no such thing as a typical day at the farm. As every day is different depending on
what project is being undertaken, what time of year it is, or what the weather is like. Bu for the sake of this
comparison I’ll used Wednesday 10th June as a typical example: wake up at 7:00 a.m., throw on the nearest
clothes and go straight outside to let the animals out. This involves topping up their food and water before
opening the door and for them to burst out of their enclosures full for energy and excitement.

SKATEBOARDING

TV, YouTube and Internet encourage more youngsters to skateboard and experiment than ever
before.
Skateboarding can be painful sport to learn. It is very normal to get hurt while practising it. You can
wear pads all over your body, but you will fall, and you will likely get hurt before you get good enough to catch
yourself. Wearing a helmet and pads can reduce the damage. The biggest thing is, when you fall, try not to use
your hands to catch yourself, but if you lose your board and you are going to smash onto the ground, you
should let your shoulder and body take it, rolling with the blow as much as you can ... It is dangerous to get
used to using your hands because at some point you will skate without the first guards.
Kids and teens try it without really knowing what are they doing. A lot of them end up in hospital one
day or the other, suffering from one or the other injury such as: broken wrist, a stitched head, bleeding nose, a
scraped knee ... These injuries can ache really badly. So you’d better be safe then sorry.

Dear Harry,

Thank you for having invited me to spend my Easter holidays in your village. It sounds
interesting and pleasant. It should be a fun to visit different places there, but I do apologize for
not coming. My family has organized a group travel on these days, and I have to join them, so I
really can’t come with you.

I think, we can put it for other days. We'll be able to discuss about it next time.

I hope you can understand me.

Looking forward hearing from you soon.

Yours friendly,

TEMPTATION

Mary notices that her friend Doda has begun to smoke since last holidays. She wants to remind him
how much smoking is dangerous, especially for teenagers. (Doda is just fourteen years old.)
« I’m worried about you », Mary says.“I saw you smoking with some of our friends. Don’t you realize the
danger of smoking?”
“I see no danger, my friend. Cigarettes help me reflect when I do homework. On the other hand, the
world has got millions of smokers and what’s wrong with them?”

“What a question! Think of your health. First, cigarettes bring about tuberculosis and other lung
diseases. Smokers are often victims of cancer and heart disease, too. Moreover, cigarettes disturb your
memory. Dear friend, don’t waste money on cigarettes”.
Besides, every time someone lights a cigarette, poisons are released into the air. As a result, everyone inhales
the smoke including the non-smokers.”
Mary kindly smiles when telling him pieces of advice. Doda understands at once that she is both a

A man flying in a hot air balloon realised he was lost. He started to come down until he could see a

would meet him a half hour ago, but I don’t know where I am, or where I am going.’’
The man below responded: “Yes. You are in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above this field.
You are between 40 and 42 degrees North Latitude and between 58 and 60 degrees West Longitude’’.“You
must be an engineer’’, responded the balloonist. “I am’’, the man replied “How did you know?’’
“Well’’, said the balloonist,“everything you have told me is technically correct, but I have no idea what to do
with this information, and the fact is I am still lost’’. “Where upon’’, the man on the ground responded, “you
must be a manager”. “I am”, replied the balloonist, “but how did you know?”
“Well”, said the man “you don’t know where you are, or where you’re going. You’ve made a promise which
you can’t keep and you expect me to solve your problem. You’ve just organised the activities and it depends
on the workers to carry out the works”.

The Mozart effects
Music is not just entertainment.it is medicine for both the brain and the body. Many people use music to help
them feel relaxedafter a busy day at work. Music can also reduce the stress of being ill, especially by reducing pain. The
director of Baltimore Hospital says that 30 minutes of classical music has the same effect as 10 milligrams of the
painkiller Valium.
Campbell also says that music can help you concentrate, but you need the right kind of music for your mood.
And he says you should listen for about ten minutes before you start studying. If your mind needs relaxing, or you are
tired and you want to feel more energetic, you should choose the appropriate music to help you. Mozart's music is very
popular, however, because it is very organized, and it makes your brain more alert and imaginative.
Music helps you study, and it can actually make you more intelligent. In one study, students who listened to
Mozart before doing a test scored higher than those who didn't. Many studies also show that children who learn to play
a musical instrument before the age of 12 can remember information better for the rest of their lives.
