RHYTHM AND DANCE


What is RHYTHM?
Rhythm is described as repeated patterns of sounds or beats
used in music, poetry, dance, or even as regular movements or
patterns of change. It is also defined as the regular recurrence of
accented and unaccented beats.
Rhythmic Activities
Rhythmic Activities are the physical manifestations of the mental and emotional response of
the individual to rhythm. These involve muscle stretching, toning, and conditioning while increasing
heart rate at the same time. It can be in the form of aerobic exercise.
The movements for these activities are performed in response to regular or specific beats.
The beat can be a form of singing, drumming, or improvised sounds.
What is DANCE?
Dance is an art form where the body moves rhythmically, usually to the beat of the music. A
simple movement, such as walking, or clapping in a pattern, to a particular rhythm can be termed a
dance. Every culture has a different dance form associated with it. It was used for varying purposes
that reveal much about their way of life. It can be an art or ritual or be used to tell tales of the past.
STEP and COUNTING PATTERNS
Step pattern refers to the movement or movements done for each dance step.
The counting pattern is a method of breaking down and counting dance moves.
Nature and Background of the Dance (Tutup)

Ethno-linguistic Group: Tausug
Tausug, also spelled Tau Sug or Tausog, also called Joloano,
Sulu, or Suluk, is one of the southwestern Philippines' largest Muslim
groups (sometimes called Moro). They live primarily in the Sulu
Archipelago, southwest of the island of Mindanao, mainly in the Jolo
island cluster.
Brief Background of the Dance
Tutup is an occupational dance from Laminusa, Sulu, which is famous
for making a unique and finely crafted food cover. Its English translation is
‘’to cover’’ or ‘’close.’’ This food covering was eventually made into dance and
is usually performed by the young during festivals like the Hari Raya and
weddings. It shows the many uses of tutup – as a hat, as a foot cover, as a wall
décor, as a lamp shade, or as a basket.
Tutup are large hemispherical plate/food covers made by both men and women. These are
made up of two layers: coconut leaves inside and silal/buri leaves outside. Dyed and folded pandan
leaves are sewn with magi fiber at the exterior to serve as decoration
