IE 010: Ergonomics 2: Work Design

1st Semester, A.Y. 2023-2024

1. Introduction
This research aims to explore the correlation between anxiety, depression, and memory abilities among
students enrolled in the College of Engineering and Architecture(CEA) at the Technological Institute of the
Philippines in Quezon City(TIP-QC). Additionally, the research will examine how demographic factors such as age,
gender, year level, and program affect the connection between anxiety, depression, and memory abilities.
Many college students struggle with anxiety and depression, which are two prevalent mental health
disorders. According to the World Health Organization, Anxiety disorders involve feeling a lot of fear and worry
and can cause changes in behavior. These symptoms can be so bad that they cause significant distress or make it
hard for someone to function normally. While Depression is a common mental disorder. Globally, it is estimated
that 5% of adults suffer from the disorder. It is characterized by persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure
in previously rewarding or enjoyable activities. It can also disturb sleep and appetite. These conditions can
significantly affect academic performance, including memory capabilities.
The relationship between mental health and cognitive function has been a subject of growing interest and
concern, particularly within the context of higher education. One critical aspect of cognitive function that has
garnered significant attention is memory. Memory is the ability to remember past experiences. When learning a new
language, studying is necessary, but remembering the words learned is what enables one to speak the language.
Memory is essential for learning because it stores and retrieves acquired information. (THE BRAIN FROM TOP TO
BOTTOM, n.d.) Therefore, understanding how anxiety and depression may impact the memory capabilities of
college students is of paramount importance.
This study's results will prove crucial in comprehending the effect of anxiety and depression on the
academic achievements of college students enrolled in engineering and architecture programs. Additionally, by
offering valuable insights, this study can aid the development of interventions to assist students in handling their
anxiety and depression and enhancing their memory abilities.
1.1. Background of the Study

1.2. Problem and Objective

The Technological Institute of the Philippines College of Engineering and Architecture in Quezon City is well
recognized for its demanding academic programs, which tend to subject the students to a lot of stress and pressure.
Anxiety and depression have become serious mental health issues among the various challenges that students
experience. Such conditions may hurt cognitive processes, including memory, which may risk the student's
academic progress and overall well-being.
The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between anxiety, depression, and memory
capabilities. The study will also examine the impact of demographic variables such as age, gender, year level, and

program on the relationship between anxiety and depression, memory capabilities, and academic performance. The
objective is also:
 To Determine the Prevalence of Anxiety and Depression
 To Examine the Impact on Memory
 To Provide Recommendations for Support
 To Contribute to the Literature
1.3. Scope and Limitations
The scope of this study is to examine the relationship between anxiety, depression, and memory among
engineering and architecture students at the Technological Institute of the Philippines. It will also investigate how
demographic factors like age, gender, year level, and program affect this correlation and academic performance.
It is limited to students in the CEA at the TIP-QC only. The findings of the study may not be generalizable to
students in other engineering and architecture programs or to students in other disciplines. The assessment of anxiety
and depression relies on self-report questionnaires, which are subject to respondents' honesty and self-awareness.
Some individuals may underreport or overreport their symptoms.
1.4. Significance of the Study
This research holds great significance for several reasons. The foremost objective is to gain an understanding of
how anxiety and depression impact the memory of engineering and architecture students. The findings will be
instrumental in devising interventions that can improve their mental well-being and enhance their memory retention.
Additionally, the study will examine how demographic factors influence academic performance and memory
retention. These insights can help develop tailored treatments that cater to individual backgrounds and promote
academic success. Ultimately, the study seeks to add to the existing body of knowledge on the correlation between
mental health and academic achievement, which can aid in creating effective methods to improve student
performance.
