I am 40 and I have two children, a boy aged 14 and a girl of 16. We are friends rather than
parent and children, so I believe that the generation gap between me and my children is
much smaller than the one which existed between me and my parents when I was a
teenager. The (25) attitude which my parents took toward me at 15 was the same as when I
was 10 or 11. For example, they still made a (26) schedule for every hour of my life, so I
was not free to choose when to do my homework or see my friends. They (27) nagged me
all the time to make my bed, tidy my room or help around the house. I was happy to do all
the things which they wanted, but I suppose that they did not trust me well enough to let me
do them in my own way.

That behaviour from my parents (28) carried on until I was about 17. I finally asked them

2
one day if we could have a proper talk about things. I remember that we sat down together
in the kitchen on a Sunday morning, and for the first time, we discussed everything. I
explained that I didn’t want to be (29) difficult, but I had to be allowed to make more of my
own decisions. And do you know, things improved from that day! The gap between us
closed a little bit.

AUDIO SCRIPT:

1. Boy: I like everybody in my family, but I do have problems with each of them sometimes. Well,
not my grandmother. She looks like she’s a very strict person, but she’s actually easier to
talk to than my parents.

2. Girl: Guess what? I got home from school today in a really good mood, because this is the day I
get my pocket money AND because I got the top mark in the semester test. I was about to
tell them when my mother started with the same old complaint about me not doing my
chores.

3. Boy: I get on really well with my parents. We always have meals together on the weekend, and
we still have family holidays, which are fantastic. But the best thing about them is the way
they always helped me to be independent, from teaching me to ride a bike when I was seven
to paying for my driving lessons now.

4. Girl: My parents don’t try to control everything about my life anymore. I choose my own clothes
and decide when to go to bed and when to get up. They are still strict about my use of social
media, though.

5. Man: I suppose all fathers feel worried when their teenage daughters start going out with boys. I
know when she’s seeing her boyfriend rather than her girlfriends, because she always puts
on a special dress.
