B. Operation
(1) The stand-by horizon is energized at 28VDC. A static inverter transforms this 28VDC into three
20V/400Hz AC signals and energizes a three-phase asynchronous motor. The rotor of the motor,
which turns at more than 23,000 rpm, supplies the vertical reference. A flag is displayed on the
screen in case of a power failure or if the rotor speed is less than 18,000 rpm.
(2) The gyroscope includes a gimbal assembly along two orthogonal axes (pitch and roll). The inner
gimbal, which includes the stator, commands the rotation of the sphere along the pitch axis. The
outer gimbal commands the rotation about the roll axis.
(3) To cope with horizontal acceleration, the reference axis of the gyroscope is held in the vertical
position by an erector system (unstable pendulous erector). The cutout of the erector system
occurs when the reference axis of the gyroscope makes an angle of 9 +/-2 degrees with the
apparent vertical.
(4) After start-up, the quick caging knob is used to reset the reference axis of the gyroscope in the
vertical position.
