What is Physical Education?

Why is Physical Education important to oneself?

Physical Education
-came from the Latin words “Physica” which means physics and “educatio’ which means the
training of the body organs and powers with the view to the promotion of hearts and vigor

OBJECTIVES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

1. Physical Development
2. Mental Development
3. Emotional Development
4. Social Development
5. Spiritual & Moral Development

1. PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT
Focus is on the acquisition and development of physical skills which can increase one’s
capability to enjoy lifetime recreational pursuits. This is attained through regular exercises and
participation in varied vigorous activities.

2. MENTAL DEVELOPMENT

Through physical education activities, learners acquire knowledge and understanding of rules
and strategies of the games, sports and dance instructions. Varied activities in physical
education help students develop their ability to analyze body movements, skills and game
situations.

3. EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Physical education activities provide opportunities for self-expression and emotional mastery.
People who have more positive feeling about physical activities are said to have more positive
balance of feelings which increase and develops self-confidence, self-reliance, and self-control.
Positive character traits like courage and discipline are likely to become part of an individual’s
life.

4. SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Physical activities often promote the opportunity to be with other people. Through social
experience, many appreciate the importance of physical education activities. Through active
participation, students develop positive and desirable traits like cooperation, sportsmanship,
friendliness, good leadership, respect for others and honesty in group competition.

5. SPIRITUAL & MORAL DEVELOPMENT

Physical Education activities provide the development of inner self and soul. Experiencing these
activities help students discover a personal meaning and purpose in life. These also lead to the
appreciation of what is good and beautiful.

PROGRAM

Intramural Sports Extramural Sports

Service Physical Education Program

This program is usually required to all students. The purpose of the program is to provide
instructions and develop skills, knowledge and favorable attitudes towards physical activities.

Intramurals Sports

This is the competitive phase of sports activities. Activities participated in the intramural
program should parallel as closely as possible to those offered in the service curriculum.

Extramural Sports
This program places emphasis on instruction and competition for students with relatively high
level of skills in sports. This program involves competition among athletes who compete with
other athletes with comparable ability.

Mandates to Physical Education Program

1987 constitution of the Republic of the Philippines

Article XI- Education, Sciences and Technology, Arts, Culture and Sports
Sec 1. The state shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all
levels and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all.

Section 19. (1) The state shall promote physical education and encourage sports programs,
league competitions and amateur sports, including training for international competitions, to
foster self- discipline, teamwork and excellence for the development of a healthy and alert
citizenry. (2) All educational institutions shall undertake regular sports activities throughout the
country in cooperation with athletic clubs and other sectors.
PHYSICAL FITNESS : LESSON 2

PHYSICAL FITNESS
-this is the ability to perform one’s daily tasks without undue fatigue but with extra reserved
energy in case of emergency.
-is defined as “a physical state of well-being that allows people to perform daily tasks or
activities with vigor, reduce the risk of health problems related to lack of exercise and
establishes a fitness base for participation in a variety of physical activities.
-Physical fitness involves in the performance of the heart, lungs and muscles of the body. What
we do with our body affects our mental health.

”This is your ability to become and stay physically healthy.”

There are six (6) components under Health-related Physical Fitness


1. Body Composition
2. Cardiovascular endurance
3. Flexibility
4. Muscular endurance
5. Strength
6. Power

Body Composition - it is the relative percentage of body fat to lean body tissue.

Cardiovascular fitness - is the ability of your body to work continuously for a long period of time
without stopping. (Also known as “Cardiorespiratory endurance”)

Flexibility - ability to use your joints fully in a wide range of motion without injury

Muscular endurance - is the ability of your body to work continuously for extended periods of
time
Strength - the amount of force your muscles can produce

Skill-Related Physical Fitness


“This is your ability to maintain high levels of performance on the playing field.”
There are six (6) components under Skill-related Physical Fitness

1. Balance
2. Coordination
3. Speed
4. Reaction time
5. Agility
6. Power

Balance - ability to keep an upright posture while standing still or moving.


Coordination - ability to use your senses together with your body parts.
Speed- ability to perform a movement or cover a distance in a short time.
Reaction time - is the amount of time it takes you to move once you recognize the need to act;
the ability to react or respond quickly to what you hear, see, or feel.
Agility - the ability to change the position of your body quickly and control your body
movements.
Power - ability to use strength quickly
