PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical Education is an educational process that
aims to improve the performance and enhancement
of human development physically, mentally,
emotionally and socially through properly selected
physical activities. Physical Education does not focus
only on the physical outcomes as a result of varied
activities but also on the development and
acquisition of knowledge and attitudes conducive to
life long learning and lifespan participations. It is also
concerned with the promotion of active lifestyle for
people of all ages. Through active participation in the
properly selected physical education activities,
students will develop good health and maintain their
high level of physical fitness that enables them to
enjoy good life.
The Aspects of Development in Physical Education
1. Physical Development – focus is on the acquisition and development of
physical skills which can increase one’s capability to enjoy lifetime
recreational pursuit. This is attained through regular exercises and
participation in varied vigorous activities.

2. Mental Development – it allows to acquire knowledge and understanding


of rules and strategies of the games, sports and dance instructions. Varied
activities in physical education help to analyse body movements, skills and
game situations.

3. Emotional Development – it provide opportunities for self-expression and


emotional mastery.

4. Social Development – often promotes the opportunity to be with other


people. Through active participation in the activities, positive and desirable
traits are develop like cooperation, sportsmanship, friendliness, good
leadership, respect for others and honesty in group competition.
Categories of
Physical Fitness
● Health-Related Fitness
- consists of components of
physical fitness that have a
relationship with good health.

● Skill-Related Fitness
- consists of components that
enhanced performance in
sports and motor skills.
Components of Health-Related Fitness
1. Body Composition – it relates to the relative amounts of muscle, fat, bone
and other vital parts of the body.

2. Cardiovascular Fitness – the ability of the circulatory and respiratory


system to supply oxygen during sustained physical activity.

3. Flexibility - the range of motion available at a joint.

4. Muscular Endurance – the muscle ability to continue to perform without


fatigue in a long period..

5. Muscular Strength - the ability of the muscle to exert force in a short


period.
Skill-Related Fitness
1. Agility – the ability to rapidly change the position of the entire body in
space with speed and accuracy.

2. Balance – the maintenance of the equilibrium while stationary or


moving.

3. Coordination – the ability to use the senses together with the body
parts in performing motor tasks smoothly and accurately.

4. Power – the ability to exert muscle force quickly. A combination of


strength and speed.

5. Speed – the ability to perform a movement within a short period of


time.

6. Reaction Time – the time elapsed between stimulation and beginning


of the reaction to it.
