a. What is air pollution?
Ans. When dust particles, smoke and other harmful substances mix with air it is called
air pollution.

b. List the gases present in air.


Ans. Air is a mixture of gases namely oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapour.
c. State how water pollution can be prevented.
Ans. Water pollution can be prevented by:
● Not putting oil, grease, medicines and cleaning agents down the sink or toilets.
● Not disposing garbage in water bodies.
● Not disposing industrial waste in water bodies without treating it first.
● Cleaning polluted water bodies such as rivers, seas and oceans

d. State the factors affecting change in weather.


Ans. The factors affecting change in weather are the sun, clouds, rain and wind.

Q1. Why do wet clothes dry faster on a hot sunny day?
Ans. The temperature on a sunny day is higher. As the rate of evaporation increases with
the increase in temperature, wet clothes dry faster on a sunny day.

scarcity during summers. The situation had become so bad that even the groundwater
had dried up.
(a) What could be the reasons for their problem?
Ans: Low rainfall, wastage or overuse of water, pollution of water.

(b) Give any one suggestion to the people of Sampur, so that they do not face the same
problem in future.
Ans: • Ensure that they turn off taps when not in use
• Turn off water while brushing
• Use a bucket of water for bathing/ washing a car
• Wash dishes in a filled tank and not under running water
• Use rainwater harvesting

2. Seema lit a candle and placed it on a table. After a while she covered the lightning
candle with a glass jar. Within a few seconds she observed that the candle went off.

a.Why did the candle flame continue to burn when placed on the table?
Ans. A lighted candle flame continues to burn due to the presence of oxygen in the air
required for burning.

b. Why did the flame of the candle go when she placed the glass jar over it?
Ans. The flame went off as there was no oxygen left in the jar.
