its applictions in different industries. Also machine selection considertions can be understand by this
project along with material selection for labels for different applications.

1
Chapter 2. INTRODUCTION

Labeling is the act of attaching or applying such a label to an object. Labeling is a process,
which takes place with greater or lesser regularity in every home, office and factory. The
process can be accomplished in many ways - it can be done by hand or it can be done by
fully automatic machinery. All will be familiar paperboard labels, tied and stapled to parcels,
bottles, cans, packing cases, and all sorts of odd signs, and in other situations exposed to
the weather.

A label applicator is a machine used by organizations to apply labels on bottles, packages,

drums, and other types of products. Label applicators are primarily used when applying
pressure-sensitive labels. For instance, a bottle is pressure-sensitive as any tensions could
lead to crumbling or deformation. Before the label applicator is applied, the labels have to
be pre-printed. However, some label applicator machines can print the labels before
applying them to the product. Naturally, such devices are usually more costly. Thus, many
manufacturers opt for labels that are printed before the labeling process. Paper, however, is
the material from which the great majority of labels are made. The label, whatever the basic
material or adhesive recipe, is an essential part of the process of packaging, the final seal
which 'hall marks' or labels the product. Labeling is the display of label in a product. A label
contains information about aproduct on its container, packaging, or the product itself. It also
has warnings in it.

Labeling is also an important part of the brand of the product and the company. It helps the
product stand out in the market, and identifies it as a part of a particular brand. This is
important in the era of high and intense competition.

2
2.1PURPOSE OF LABELING

1. Identification: Identity of the product is of prime importance as the consumer must be

able to identify the contents. Identification of the manufacturer and identity of the brand
name are also significant as the product is many times associated with the brand name.
2. Information: A label imparts information on ingredients of products, adequate
directions for use and warnings if necessary. It also mentions the quantity of contents within
the container in terms of either weight, liquid measure, dry measure or numerical count.
3. Decoration: Labels are part of the product or the process of product presentation. When
the product is choicely labelled in colour, it acts as a "Silent Salesman".
The colour and design should go well with the product and the label should have some
relationship to the size and shape of the package and container. Generally speaking design
can include shape, colour, style, picture appeal and these are carefully studied by the printer
specialist.

3
2.2Why labeling machine?

1. Eliminates Need for supervision

Automatic labeling machines require little to no supervision and very little human
intervention is required. In most cases, all that is needed is to start the process and program
the machine for the necessary tasks. This saves time by eliminating the need to have a hands-
on operator to supervise the process, which is the case with semi-automatic labeling
machines.

2. Multipurpose Usage

Automatic labeling machines have provisions for diverse labels and can be programmed as
needed. They are designed to accommodate a variety of products and container sizes and
shapes. All that will be required to activate this feature is to configure the machine for the
different sizes, shapes, and labels. Afterward, you can save and recall the design again when
needed.

In contrast, semi-automatic labeling machines are programmed to use only one label. While
semi-automatic labeling machines can be maneuvered by alternating the spool design, this
can lead to labeling errors which will cost the producer more money and delay the production
timeline.

3. Increases Chances of Meeting Production Timelines

Automation ensures that a producer can set and achieve timelines without unforeseeable
circumstances like fatigue, illness, family interference, and other factors getting in the way.
These factors are usually inhibiting and can delay production timelines when using
manpower, rather than automated machines.

4. It Aids Professionalism

Using an automatic machine to label guarantees a neat job and eliminates the occurrence of a
mistake. This ensures accurate and precise labeling.

4
5. Speedy Production

Automatic labeling machines remove manual operation which is slower and more expensive
in the long run. While it takes a substantial sum to purchase one up front, when compared
with long-term operating costs, you will appreciate the choice of an automatic labeling
machine over a semi-automatic labeling or manual operation.

6. High Efficiency and Low Cost

An automatic machine with multipurpose usage, a high level of accuracy, and speed cannot
be compared to manual labeling. In the long run, the producer saves himself a lot of money in
labor costs.

Benefits of Labeling a Product

 It makes it identifiable by brand users

 It gives necessary information about the product to a potential buyer.

 It helps the consumer to make an informed decision based on the information provided.

 For special products, it teaches consumers how to use the product to gain the maximum
benefit.

Conclusion

Automatic labeling machines will cut back on your operation expenses, save you time
(which, when converted, is also money), and most importantly, save you the trouble of
managing more workers and dealing with diverse human moods and emotions. If you are still
contemplating the decision to buy one, you are wasting time!

flat, oval, square of different size. The labeling of the bottle depends on the label size and
quality and up to 100 bottles are labelled due to the high quality motor of the machine. We
provide automatic sticker labeling machines for bottle that meet the need of our clients for
automatic labeling of stickers that gives modern packaging with high efficiency, accuracy,
speed & quality. The sticker labeling machine adjustments are user friendly that requires
minimal tools.

Being involved in the production industry can never be an easy task. Either you are in food
production or cosmetic industry or if in any other manufacturing industry, you have to follow
a certain procedure which includes labeling of the product as well. Labeling is an important
step because it identifies the product. The name tag shares a lot of information about the
product. Labeling conveys the information of the product and ingredient or component
involved in making of it.Special kind of device that is bottle sticker labellers is employed to
label the bottles present in bulk quantities.

7
Functions of a bottle labeller:

The bottle labeller machine employed for sticker labeling, attach self-adhesive stickers on the
required part or targeted part of the bottles.Labellers, machines that automatically apply
pressure sensitive labels to a product or container, are the best way to maximize your labeling
speed and accuracy. The two basic applications of labellers are Apply-only labellers, which
apply pre-printed labels to a package, and Print and Apply labellers, which print the labels and
then applies them. The label applicator is the part that puts the label onto the product or
package. Several types of label applicators are available to fit varying needs. The following
describes the basics.Roll-on. This method rolls the label onto a product that is moving along a
conveyor using a foam or rubber spring-loaded bar. You achieve high speed and good
accuracy, but the label must feed in the same direction and match the speed at which the product
is moving.

Wipe-on / Brush-on. This type of label applicator is similar to the roll-on type, but uses a
brush or wipe assembly instead of a roller. You would use this method with products that are
irregular in shape or don’t have a flat surface.Vacuum Grid Wipe-on / Roll-on. Here the
label is peeled onto a spring-loaded vacuum grid and either rolled or wiped on to the product.
This method is used in applications where the label is applied to a convex surface, the
applicator must reach into an area, or the applicator cannot match the speed of the product.
Blow-on. This type of applicator blows the label onto the product with a controlled blast of
air. You achieve high application rates and can position the applicator in any direction, but
can’t wrap around the product without additional components. Accuracy can be an issue with
large labels.Air Cylinder Tamp– Here an air cylinder and vacuum pad combination applies
the label on to the product surface. This type of application is also known as “air tamp” or
tamper applicators. The label is dispensed onto a tamp pad with a blast of air and held in
place using a vacuum system. You have high accuracy with this type of application, can run
multiple label sizes without having to change tamp pads, can position the applicator in
multiple directions, and not have to match applicator speed to conveyor speed. However, the
applicator has slower applications rates.

8
2.4 Main Components
A label applicator machine for bottles consists of main components as listed here:

 Print Engine: The print engine is usually an integral part of the applicator but essentially a
special module. This module will receive data from the computer and print it onto the label
that is to be used in the label applicator. This is similar to the process of an inject printer and is
very effective for all types of labels.

 Label Applicator: This component helps apply the label to the product and has several
methods of doing so. The applicator will make use of either a pneumatic or electric cylinder
that has specially designed label pad. It can use several processes to place the label on product
surface like air blow, a burst of air, wipe the label on the surface. It can also place labels on
multiple sides of a product.

9
 Label Roll handling: This section dictates how the label is delivered to the print engine and
also ensures proper handling of the waste label that remains after the process of label
application. It requires to insert the correct amount of pressure since too much pressure will
cause the line to break and require re-threading.

 Computer Power: Computing power is also an important component of this machine and has
the ability to store a large amount of data, besides which they also control data from external
sources. These external sources can be a scanner, weighing scale, etc

10
 Label Dispenser: The label dispenser is the section of the labeling machine where labels
are stored and dispensed and one of the most crucial labeling machine parts. There are
many options for storing labels, from a simple tray to a fully automated feeder.Regardless
of the type of label holding device used, the process is generally the same: the label strip
(or pieces) is placed in a hopper or top-loading section from where it is used as needed.
During the dispensing process, the label stock typically passes by a peeler plate that serves
to separate the backing stock from the label. In some cases, the storage is actually
integrated into the label maker section. This type of labeling machinery allows different-
sized labels to be accessed without having to replace the stock. That can be useful when
several different product labels are required or when many different barcodes, graphics,
and text need to be printed within a small period of time.

11
2.5 Types of label Applicator

There are mainly three types of label applicators to handle either task of applying only or both
printing and applying.

 Integrated automated label: An integrated label applicator as the name suggests is fully
integrated into the product handling system and has a high level of automation. These type of
machines are cost effective and help streamline the labeling process. This type of machine will
usually have the option of either manually placing the products on the conveyor for the
purpose of labeling or letting the machine handle it automatically.

 Stand-alone: The way the semi-automated machines works is the operator places the product
onto the fixture and then activates the machine to apply the label using a sensor of some kind.

 Semi-automated: This is a label applicator which can be integrated along with a third party
product handling system. This can include a portable head mount and can also be installed
directly onto a conveyor of another machine.

2.6 Factors Considerations while selecting suitable label applicator
machine

 Product profile. Does the product have a flat, concave, convex, or other irregular
surface? You might need to consider an applicator that makes contact with the surface
to wipe-on or brush on the label.
 Label size. Do you use multiple size labels in your packaging? What shape is the label,
or what is the repeat or feed dimension?
 Label material. There are many types of pressure sensitive materials that can affect
label application.
 Application rate. At what rate does the product move past the applicator?
 Accuracy. What are the tolerances for label placement?
 Location. Where does the label need to be, on the top, side, corner, or bottom of the
product?
 Which type ofadhesive should be used:

II label applicator applies a front and back label to your product.
Both units are avilable in either a 10" wide or a 16" wide version for taller products.
Two different versions of the Bottle-Matic are available. The original Bottle-Matic
applies one label per bottle while the Bottle-Matic II applies a front and back label to
a bottle or other round cylindrical container. If using the Bottle-Matic II, make sure
your label supplier knows to alternate front and back labels on the rolls when printing
them.
Containers to be labeled should be flat from top to bottom without any thing
protruding from the side or top. If you have a container or product with an oversize
cap or lid, you can get a specially cut roller for your Bottle-Matic to compensate for
this protrusion.

23
Chapter 4. TROUBLE SHOOTING.

Since bottle labeling can be a complex application, there are many potential issues that may
arise, along with a wide range of possible causes for that particular issue. This can make it
difficult to diagnose and solve the problem to get your production running again.

Some issues we’ve commonly seen in the field include, but are not limited to:

 Labels curling away from bottle

 Wrinkling or blistering of label
 Failure to pick labels out of hopper
 Adhesive smearing on bottles or labels
 Spotty adhesion
 Labels tearing in machine
 Labels falling off
 Crooked labels
 Clear label not being applied-The majority of applicators make use of a light
and dark sensor in order to detect the gap within the labels. To solve this issue
you will first want to print a black timing (also known as an eye) on the liner’s
backside. You also have the option of selecting a sensor which is ultrasonic
that uses sound waves to detect label gaps.
 Application results in line tears-When this happens it is often a sign that the
applicator tip might need to be repaired or replaced. It may also benefit from
UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) tape. This tape is highly slippery and
is akin to Teflon. Sometimes tiny tears on the paper liner side are a result of
the label plant.
 Die strikes-Die strikes are the most frequent problem you’ll run into when
applying labels automatically. The tools used for die cutting labels have high
precision, but will eventually wear out. Once this happens the tooling must be
repaired, replaced or sharpened. Die gauges can also be added to the press to
detect if they’ve become worn.

 During application, the label follows the peel tip-There are a number of things
which can cause this problem. The label plant die strikes might have
deteriorated, the applicator’s tension might not be high enough or the
applicator is webbed incorrectly. These issues should be evaluated by a
specialist and you should inquire as to whether the label plant uses measuring
gauges with the press to monitor these things. Sometimes problems can result
when the weight of the adhesive coat or void is not what it should be.

Chapter 7.CONCLUSION

In this project we came to know about various types of label applicator machines
along with their functions and applications. We also came to know why labelling
plays an important role in packaging. It is the face of any product or we can say
packaging itself. With the help of label applicator machines we can label and type,
shape and size product it may be bottle, drum, carton, even small vials ampoules can
be labelled.
Different types of label applicator models gives different applications in different
industries. This types of models can be used in various industries like FMCG,
Pharmaceuticals, food industries etc. Along with the applications it has many benefits
over manual labelling like accuracy, high speed, time saving, less contamination.
As the industry is growing more towards automisation this type of machines will
contribute more to the packaging sectors by manufacturing such high speed label
applicators machine along in build with printing facility and also track and trace
