General Objective:
The study aims to determine the effect of madre cacao (gliricidia sepium) and ipil-ipil (leucaena leucocephala) as
alternative feed ingredients on the growth performance of broiler chickens.
Specific Objectives:
1. To determine the effect of Madre Cacao and Ipil-ipil leaf meal on the growth performance of Broiler Chickens in
terms of body weight, average daily gain, and feed conversion ratio.
2. To evaluate the carcass quality of Broiler Chickens fed with Madre Cacao and Ipil-ipil leaf meal in terms of dressing
percentage, breast muscle weight, and thigh muscle weight.
3. To analyze the cost-effectiveness of using Madre Cacao and Ipil-ipil leaf meal as alternative feed ingredients for
Broiler Chickens.
Rationale
Broiler chicken production is a major agricultural enterprise in many developing countries, including the Philippines.
However, the cost of commercial poultry feed is a major challenge for farmers. One way to reduce feed costs is to use
alternative feed ingredients that are locally available and affordable.
Madre cacao (Gliricidia sepium) and ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala) are two leguminous trees that are widely grown in
the Philippines. Their leaves are a good source of protein, minerals, and vitamins. Studies have shown that madre
cacao and ipil-ipil leaf meal can be used as alternative feed ingredients for broiler chickens without compromising their
growth performance.
Research Gap:
The commercial broiler industry is highly dependent on commercial feeds, which are often expensive and can be
subject to price fluctuations. This can make it difficult for small-scale farmers to compete and make a profit. The use of
alternative feed ingredients, such as madre cacao and ipil-ipil, could help to reduce the cost of feeding broilers and
improve the profitability of small-scale broiler production.
According to Hassan et al. (2016) found that broiler chickens fed diets containing 30% or 50% madre cacao leaf meal
had higher body weights and better feed conversion ratios than those fed a control diet.
Another study by Njidda et al. (2017) found that broiler chickens fed containing 20% or 30% ipil-ipil leaf meal had
significantly higher body weights and better feed conversion ratios than birds fed a control diet.
Experimental Research Design & Treatment:
The experimental research design for this study would be a completely randomized design (CRD) Gao, Z , et Al
(2019). This means that the chicks would be randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups:
Treatment 1: Controlled
Treatment 2: 50% Commercial Feed + 50% Alternative Feed
Treatment 3: 30% Commercial Feed + 70% Alternative Feed
Location and Duration of the study
This study will be conducted at Purok 19, Feeder Road 4, Santo Tomas Davao del Norte. The duration of the study
will be the period of December 2023 to January 2024.
Data to be gathered:
Initial Weight - Weight of the experimental animals starting every week of feeding madre cacao and ipil-ipil.
Final Weight = Weight of the experimental animals during the termination date of the study.
Body Weight Gain = Final Weight - Initial Weight
Average Daily Gain = Final Weight – Initial Weight
# of days of alternative
Feed Consumption = Total weight of feeds given – left over
Feed Efficiency = Total feed consumed
Total weight gain
