LESSON PLAN

DATE: UNIT PLAN DAY 1 GRADE: 8 PERIOD:

TOPIC: Functions and relations

OBJECTIVE(S)/STANDARDS:
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able to identify and evaluate relations and functions
using graphing, mapping, sets of ordered pairs, and tables of values.
Standards: 8.F.A.1 Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one
output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the
corresponding output.

MATERIALS/MEDIA:
For this lesson I will use a projector, whiteboard, a straight edge, paper, and pencil to teach
the material, and students will use paper, pencil, and a straight edge to complete their work.

METHODS/TECHNIQUES:
Introduction Activity (5-10 minutes): I will start the period by telling the class that we will be
going over functions and relations. Then, I will project the following warm up problem on
the board for students to complete. They will have about 5 minutes to work independently or
with others, then we will come together and share answers as a class.

Given the following function, fill out the table of values and graph the data. What can you
observe about the relationship between your x and y values?

Process (25 minutes): Students will follow along and take notes as we work through my
handwritten lesson. My notes will be projected on the whiteboard as we work through them,
and will be subject to change depending on the values students would like to see. During this
time, students will be given the chance to ask and answer questions about the material. My
notes are attached below.
Conclusion (15 minutes): I will conclude the lesson by answering any questions and passing
out the homework assignment. Students will have class time to work on and finish as much
of the work possible. They may do this individually or in groups. The homework assignment
is attached below with solutions.

MODIFICATIONS
For this lesson, I will provide students with diverse learning needs a copy of my notes to follow along
with as we worked through the period. I will also give them a shorter homework assignment, with
each type of problem but one relation that is a function and one that is not. These students would also
be encouraged to work with myself or other students during the warm up and on the homework.

CONNECTIONS-EXTENSIONS:
This lesson can be used to introduce linear functions and how to model these functions. This would
include tables of values and graphs.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
The homework for this lesson is attached above, along with its solutions. Students are expected to
complete all of the problems by the following class period. They should get the same yes and no
answers, but explanations may vary. Any questions on the homework can be addressed before class is
dismissed or before the warm up the following da
