Introduction

A compound sentence is when you combine each groupof a sentences, using the
conjunction given.

Form a compound subject, a compound predicate, or acompound sentence. Also it is
when you put together allthree of them together and then it makes a
compoundsentence.

Compound sentences can make writing rich and colorful. While beginning writers
generally learn to write simplesentences first, compound sentences provide moredetail
and make paragraphs more interesting andengaging.

When forming compound sentences, it is important tounderstand the components
of a compound sentenceand to use the proper punctuation to join clauses.

Compound sentence is sentence that contains at leasttwo independent
clauses linked together.

It does not require a dependent clause.

The main clauses can be separated by a period (.),
a period indicates a complete stop.

A compound sentence structure shows that two thoughtsare connected and of
equal importance.

These four important characteristics of compoundsentences:

A compound sentence is like a set of twins; each is aseparate person, yet each is
connected to the other withthe same biological "make-up." That is, each has asubject, a
verb, and words to complete the thought. Although they are joined by a linking
word, eachsentence of the compound is complete in itself and canstand alone.

The two parts of the compound sentence need to belinked correctly, with a comma and
then a linking word atthe place where one sentence ends and the other begins.
(Otherwise you will have a sentence error calleda run-on sentence. Run-on sentences are
typicallycompound sentences without the proper punctuationand/or linking word.)
Session

Because there are two complete sentences in acompound sentence, each has equal weight in
terms of the ideas being presented. That is, you may want to linksentences into a compound
to show that their ideas areequally important.

The linking word shows the relationship between theideas:

and = the 2nd sentence contains the same type of idea

but = the 2nd sentence contains an equal but opposite idea

or = the 2nd sentence contains an equal choice

so = the 2nd sentence contains an equally important outcomeor result

Arguments are to be avoided: they are alwaysvulgar and often convincing.
Example for Sentences That Are NotCompound Sentences

When I visit my mother, I eat cookies.* This is NOT a compound sentence because
"When I visit mymother" is not an independent clause and a coordinator is
notused.

I like to fish
because
fishing is fun.* Although "I like to fish" is an independent clause and "fishing
isfun" is an independent clause, this is still not a compoundsentence. It is a
complex sentence, since none of the seven
coordinators are used here.
Only independent clauses joined by one of theabove coordinators are compound
sentences. When anindependent clause and a dependent clause are joined,a complex
sentence is formed, which is distinct from acompound sentence.

Conclusion

A compound sentence contains two or moreindependent clauses joined by a
coordinator. It isdistinct from a complex sentence, which is anindependent clause that is
joined with a dependentclause.

they are joined by a
coordinator
with a commapreceding it.

It does not require a dependent clause.
