TIDAL THEORY

- Tidal theory was proposed by Sir James Jeans and Harold Jeffreys in 1918 as a variation of the
planetesimal theory.
- This theory states that:
- A. the earth was formed from materials pulled out from the sun.
- B. it suggests that a huge tidal wave, raised on the sun by a passing star, was drawn into a long
filament and became detached from the principal mass
- C. And the evolution of a celestial body was based on the action of tidal forces.

The similarities of tidal and planetesimal theory

- Tidal and Planetesimal theory states that:

- A. the solar system starts from the sun
- Both theories agreed that 4.6 billion years ago, the sun was a massive star that existed before
the solar system
- B. the solar system originated from the gravitational force of a large star that crossed the sun
- The attracted gas from the star’s gravitational force is retained by the sun and slowly turns into
the earth, planets and other subjects in the solar system
- C. stars that cross the sun are massive

The difference between planetesimal theory and tidal theory

- A. There is no planetesimal
- The planetesimal theory states that the mass attracted from the sun directly becomes space
material. However, the theory of tides states that the mass attracted from the sun forms
unstable tidal waves then breaks up into gas filaments.
