A. Grammar Corner

1. Simple Present Tense

The formula for simple present tense is V1 or V1s/es.

The simple present tense is used for:


- Habits
- Repeated actions or events
- General truths/facts
- Fixed arrangements
- Instructions or directions

How to make V1 or V1s/es.

For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -X, or -Z; add -ES. go – goes
catch – catches
wash – washes
kiss – kisses
box – boxes
fix – fixes

For verbs that end in ‘consonant + Y’, drop the Y, and add -IES. carry – carries
study – studies
worry – worries
marry – marries

For verbs that end in ‘vowel + Y’, add -S. play – plays
say – says
enjoy – enjoys

2. Verbal and Nominal Sentences

Verbal sentences use verbs. Below are the formulas for verbal sentences.
Verbal Sentence

Positive S + V1 + …. I do charity work.

Negative S + do/does not + V1 + …. He doesn’t sing well.

Interrogative (+) Do/does + S + V1…? Do you like to eat pasta?


Interrogative (-) Do/does + S + not + V1…? Does she hate children?

However, we use nominal sentences to describe someone’s personality in the simple
present tense. Nominal sentences replace the verb with the auxiliary verb ‘TO BE’. Below
are the formulas for nominal sentences.
Nominal Sentence

Negative S + V1 + not + Adj. He is not caring because he


leaves me alone when I cry.

Interrogative (+) V1 + S + Adj? Are they organized?

1. Present Continuous Tense

The formula for the present continuous tense is below.


Present + Continuous

V1 s/es + Be + Ving

It starts in the recent past, is still running, and may stop in the future.
The Present Continuous Tense is used for:
- Things happening right now (I am learning English at Cetta.)
- Temporary events (I am watching a new Netflix series.)
- New patterns or habits (You are eating sushi all the time.)

in Jakarta so, I work from Monday to Friday. I don’t have a lot of time to eat lunch so I
usually go to the mall next to my office. The food court has a lot of choices. I can eat
something different every day.
Something happened in the food court. So, I am eating spaghetti while my
friend John is waiting in line to order his food. An old lady cut the queue in front of
him. He didn’t know what to do and just looked at me. I can not do anything because
I am still eating my food. He was arguing with the old lady for 5 minutes and in the
end, she won. He had to wait another 10 minutes to order his food.

1. Past Continuous

The formula for the past continuous is below.


Past + Continuous

V2 + Be + Ving

The past continuous is used:


- for something which happened before another action.
- at the beginning of a story.
- for something that happened before and after a specific time.
- to show that something continued for some time.
- for something that happened again and again.
- with verbs which show change or growth.

Sentence Examples

Positive S + was/were + Ving I was walking around Bali.

Negative S + was/were + not + Ving We were not having fun.

Interrogative (+) Was/Were + S + Ving…? Was she swimming with the sharks?
