Learning Module of Passive Voice 1

1. Passive voice
1.1 Definition of passive voice
Passive voice is a sentence which has been reversed. A sentence always contains at least
a subject and an object, so as in passive sentence. It is distinguished with active sentence, if
active sentence means the subject is the one who doing action, in passive voice the subject is the
one who received an action. If we look at the formula of a general active sentence:
Subject + verb + object
We can see from the formula above, the object comes after a verb (can be auxiliary verb
or action verb). It means the object receive an action from the subject. While in passive, the
object becomes the subject but it does not do an action, it receives. The formula will be:
Object + auxiliary verb + v3 + by + subject
A formula of passive sentences can be different depends on the tenses used, but it always
contains auxiliary verb, participle (V3), and by. Object pronoun (me, you, him, her, it, us, them)
in active sentence (object) will be subject pronoun (I, you, they, we, she, he, it) if it being the
subject in the passive sentence. For example:
He is disappointing me → I am being disappointed by him
So, we can say the formula is:

Subject + auxiliary verb + v3 + by + object

We knew that the formula
depends on the tenses used, so there are 16 formulas of passive voice. So as the tenses, passive
voices are 16:
1. Simple present
2. Present continuous
3. Present perfect
4. Present perfect continuous
5. Simple past
6. Past continuous
7. Past perfect

1.2.9 Simple future

Simple future tense is a tense to describe an event that has not started and will
occur in the future. Sentences in the simple future tense can be marked by the use of the
words will, shall, and going to. Simple future tense is also used to express a prediction or
desire.
It is different from the active sentence formulation of the future tense which uses
the basic verb or "bare infinitive" as the predicate, while for the passive sentence it will
use the past participle or the third form of the verb (verb-3).
As it is also known that the formula for the future tense is divided into two forms,
namely with capital "will/shall" and "going to". The two forms of this formula will also
apply to passive voice future tense sentences.
For the difference between the formula and the active sentence, in this passive
sentence, "be" will be inserted after the modal "will" and after "going to". Then as usual,
the subject that is usually active will become the object in the passive sentence.
Formulas:
Active Passive
S + will/shall + V1 + O + C S + will be + V3 + by + O + C
S + is/am/are going to + V1 + O + C S + is/am/are going to be + V3 + by + O + C
