Table No 2 and 3 shows the data regarding the Area, production and productivity of walnuts in J&K from 2015-2016 to
2019-2020.in the year of 2015-2016,2016-2017 the area under walnuts in J&K was 88836 hectares and 89275 hectares,
production was 266012,266159 metric tonnes, productivity was 2.9 &2.98.looking at the table which clearly shows that the
production has increased by 147 metric tonnes while the area has decreased by 439 hectares.in the years of 2017-
2018,2018-2019 the area under walnuts was 85564,& 84459 hectares, production was 275287,& 275387 metric tonnes and
productivity was 3.21 & 3.26.During these two years the area has decreased by 1105 hectares while production has
increased by 100 metric tonnes.Productivity also increased during these two years from 3.21 to 3.26.Based on the data we
can say that during the period of our study the area under walnuts has decreased continuously while production has
increased because of which the productivity had also increased from 2.9 in 2015-2016 to 3.26 in 2018-2019.
Table No.4 shows the data regarding the area, production and productivity of walnuts in District Kupwara from the year
2015-2016 to 2018-2019.The data in the table clearly shows that, the area, production and productivity has increased from
8674 hectares,35823 metric tonnes,1.78,in 2015-2016 to 8800 hectares,45760 metric tonnes,5.2.From the figures shown in
the table it is clear that the area, production and productivity has continuously increased from 2015-2016 to 2018-

CONCLUSION
The harvesting of walnut provides employment to thousands of people directly or indirectly and generates huge revenue for
the District. As compared to Apple, walnut plantation is much more profitable as it requires little labour, smaller space and
less irrigation.the people associated with the production of walnut are facing a wide range of issues starting from the
plantation till marketing of the product.the govt.of J&K should provide the farmers good quality grafted plants and should
encourage fresh walnut plantation.
