CRITICAL PATH

METHOD OF
PROJECT
SCHEDULING
INTRODUCTION
The Critical Path Method (CPM) is a project
scheduling technique that determines the
longest sequence of dependent activities
and calculates the minimum time required to
complete the project. CPM helps project
managers optimize project schedules by
identifying the critical path, which is the
sequence of activities that must be
completed on time to ensure the project ends
on schedule.
STEP 1: DEFINE ACTIVITIES

The first step in using CPM is to define all the

project activities and determine their
dependencies. Activities are defined as tasks
that consume time and resources and are
necessary to complete the project.
Dependencies are the relationships between
the activities and determine the order in which
they must be completed.
STEP 2: CONSTRUCT THE
NETWORK DIAGRAM
The second step in using CPM is to construct
the network diagram. The network diagram
is a visual representation of the project
activities and their dependencies. It helps
project managers identify the critical path
and calculate the minimum time required to
complete the project. The network diagram is
also useful for communicating the project
schedule to stakeholders.
STEP 3: DETERMINE THE CRITICAL PATH

The third step in using CPM is to determine

the critical path. The critical path is the
longest sequence of dependent activities
and represents the minimum time required
to complete the project. Activities on the
critical path must be completed on time to
ensure the project ends on schedule. Project
managers can use the critical path to
identify activities that can be delayed
without affecting the project deadline.
STEP 4: CALCULATE ACTIVITY
SLACK
The fourth step in using CPM is to calculate
activity slack. Activity slack is the amount of
time an activity can be delayed without
affecting the project deadline. Activities on
the critical path have zero slack. Activities
not on the critical path have positive slack.
Project managers can use activity slack to
adjust the project schedule and optimize
project resources.
CONCLUSION
The Critical Path Method is a powerful tool for project managers to
optimize project schedules and ensure projects are completed on time. By
defining activities, constructing a network diagram, determining the
critical path, and calculating activity slack, project managers can identify
risks and opportunities and make informed decisions. CPM is a formal and
proven technique that can be applied to a wide range of projects.
