The transistor switching circuit in figure 1.3 has following parameters,

VBE (Saturation) = 0.75 V, VCE (Saturation) = 0.2 V, 10 ≤ β ≤ 40
Find out the value of RB and Power requirement of the base source.

4. What are the main differences in the steady state output characteristics of a GTO and a
thyristor? What effect do they have on the gate drive requirement of a GTO?

Question 2

Figure 2.1

Page 2
Figure 2.1 shows a single-phase diode rectifier which is connected to a DC load consisting of a
resistor and inductor. The rectifier is supplied from a transformer as shown in the figure. It is
require that the load current should always be positive and continuous. The input voltage to
the rectifier is given by, 𝑉𝑠 = 𝑉𝑚 sin 𝜔𝑡.

1. Sketch the output voltage waveform and the output current waveform of the rectifier
2. Show that the equation of the instantaneous load current is given by the following
equation.

𝑉𝑚 𝑉𝑚 𝐸 −𝑅 𝐸
𝑖𝐿 (𝑡) = 𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝜔𝑡 − 𝜃) + ( 𝑆𝑖𝑛 𝜃 + ) 𝑒 ( 𝐿 )𝑡 −
𝑍 𝑍 𝑅 𝑅
𝜔𝐿
Where, 𝑍 = √𝑅 2 + (𝜔𝐿)2 and 𝜃 = 𝑡𝑎𝑛−1 ( 𝑅 )

𝑠.𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃+ 𝜔.𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃
(Use Laplace Transformation, 𝐿{𝑆𝑖𝑛(𝜔𝑡 + 𝜃)} = )
𝑆 2 +𝜔2

3. The Parameters of the load in Figure 2.1 and the voltage 𝑉𝑠 are given as follows,

R = 0.5 Ω, L = 2 mH, E = 210 V, 𝑉𝑚 = √2x240 V, f = 50 Hz

i. Is the load current always positive? Give the reason for your answer.
ii. Calculate the average load current.
iii. Suggest a solution for the above rectifier to achieve a positive load current always. Justify
your answer.

Question 3

Figure 3.1

Page 3
The Speed of a separately-exited DC motor is controlled by two single phase semi-converters as
shown in Figure 3.1. The AC supply voltage to the armature and field semi-converters is 240 V.
The supply frequency is 50 Hz.

The DC motor has the following parameters,

Armature winding resistance, 𝑅𝑎 = 0.4 Ω

Field winding resistance, 𝑅𝑓 = 150 Ω

Voltage Constant, 𝐾𝑉 = 0.7 𝑉/(𝐴 − 𝑟𝑎𝑑/𝑠)

The DC motor holds the following relationships,

Motor back emf, 𝐸𝑔 = 𝐾𝑉 𝜔𝑚 𝐼𝑓

Electromagnetic torque developed, 𝑇𝑒 = 𝐾𝑉 𝐼𝑎 𝐼𝑓

The mechanical torque on the motor is 50 Nm. The motor field current is set to the maximum
possible value. The inductances of the armature and field circuits are large enough to make the
armature and field currents continuous and ripple free.

1. Discuss the principle by which the speed of a separately-excite DC motor can be

controlled.
2. Derive the formulas for the armature and the field voltage
3. At the motor shaft speed of 1000 rpm, evaluate the delay angle of the thyristors of the
semi-converter supplying the armature winding.
4. If the mechanical load torque on the motor is constant and equal to 50 Nm, and the motor
field current is constant at maximum possible value, evaluate the motor speed control
range.
