Experiment: Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL) and Kirchhoff's Current Law

(KCL) Lab Report

CAUTION:
1. Do not connect the circuit to and turn on the supply until the circuit has
been checked by your teacher or laboratory instructor.
2. Electrical circuits are potentially dangerous and may cause fatal injury
resulting in death.
3. Take care of the range of reading of the apparatus before connecting it
with circuit.
4. Don’t come to physical contact with any bare circuit element.

OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this lab experiment is to demonstrate the principles of
Kirchhoff's Voltage

Law (KVL) and Kirchhoff's Current Law (KCL) by constructing a simple

electrical circuit

and verifying the laws using experimental measurements.

Apparatus required :

Serial No Apparatus Name Range Quantity

01 Regulated Power Supply (0-30V) 2

R.P.S
02 Resistors 550Ω,990Ω, 3
2155Ω
03 Ammeter 0-30mA 3

04 Voltmeter 0-30V 3

05 Breadboard - 3

06 Connecting wires - 1

Statements :
Kirchhoff’s Current Law: It states that the sum of the currents entering
into any node is equal to the sum of the currents leaving the node .
Kirchhoff’s Voltage Law: It states that the algebraic sum of all the
branches voltage around any closed path in a circuit is always zero at all
instants of time.

Precaution :
i. Voltage control nob should bee kept at minimum position.
ii. Current control knob should be kept at minimum position.
Circuit KCL:

Procedure for KCL:

i. Give the connection as per the circuit diagram.
ii. Set a particular value in RPS.
iii. Note down the corresponding ammeter reading.
iv. Repeat the same for different voltages.

Serial No Voltage 𝐼1 𝐼2 𝐼3 𝐼 = 𝐼1 + 𝐼2 + 𝐼3

01 10 0.7 0.5 0.23 0.73

02 15 1.1 0.8 0.31 1.11

03 20 1.6 1.1 0.52 1.62

Procedure for KVL:
i. Give the connection as per the circuit diagram.
ii. Set a particular value in RPS.
iii. Note down the corresponding voltage reading.
iv. Repeat the same for different voltages.

Serial No E 𝑉1 𝑉2 𝑉3 𝐸 = 𝑉1 + 𝑉2

01 10 4.5 5.6 5.7 10.1

02 15 6.7 8.39 8.3 15.09

03 20 9.8 10.8 10.5 20.6

CONCLUSION:
The experimental measurements do not perfectly confirm the validity of
Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL) due to the limitations of the components
and experimental errors. The sum of the voltage drops across the resistors
is slightly higher than the applied.
