A design basis document should record how the low temperature analysis will be undertaken. Whereas this
design guide provides general principles and concepts, the project design basis should address the specific
process, geographic, statutory and Customer requirements for the facility under consideration.

The required accuracy will depend on the intended use of the results. Feasibility and conceptual studies
may require a lesser degree of accuracy than front-end and detailed engineering design. For preliminary
studies, it may be desirable to use simple methods to predict low temperatures and then add a relatively
large design margin. Detailed engineering may employ more rigorous methods with smaller design margins
to reflect the increased level of confidence in the results.

Design margins should be based on experience in similar services rather than a generic temperature margin
as the results are typically sensitive to initial conditions, system geometry, and fluid composition. Sensitivity
