Motor Power (P) = 3HP = 2337 Watt = 2337 Nm/s

N1 = 952 Rpm
N2 = 600 Rpm
T1 = 17
T2 = 27
D1 = 44 mm = 0,044 m
D2 = 74

 𝐷1 𝑁1
V= 60

 .0,044 𝑚 .952 𝑅𝑝𝑚

V= = 2,19 m/s
60 𝑠

𝑃 2337 𝑁𝑚/𝑠
Load on chain = 𝑣 = 2,19 𝑚/𝑠
= 1020 N

Reduce the load on chain by replace the chain-sprocket spec. as follow

Velocity Ratio = N1/N2 = 952 Rpm / 600 Rpm = 1,58; let say 2

From Table above, we find that for the roller chain, the number of teeth on the smaller
sprocket or pinion (T1) for a velocity ratio of 2 are 27.
So for number of teeth on the larger sprocket should:
T2 = T1 . N1/N2
T2 = 27 . 952 / 600 = 42,8 teeth; let say 43 teeth

Load factor (K1) for variable load with heavy shock = 1,5
Lubrication factor (K2) for periodic lubrication = 1,5
Rating factor (K3) for continuous usage = 1,5

So service factor (Ks) = K1 . K2 . K3 = 1,5 . 1,5 . 1,5 = 3,375

Design Power = P . Ks = 2238 Watt . 3,375 = 7549 Watt

If we plan to use duplex chain, then the design power of each strand will be:
7549 Watt / 2 strand = 3774 Watt/Strand
Let say the velocity of smaller sprocket is 1000 Rpm. According to above table, the type of
chain should be used is 08B which is able to hold 5,09 KWatt per stand and it’s still
permissible to hold the power of 3774 Watt per strand.
The ISO 08B chain type has specification as below table

So the pitch circle diameter of the smaller sprocket or pinion is:

180
D1 = p cosec ( 𝑇1 )
180
D1 = 12,7mm cosec ( 27 )
D1 = 109,22 mm = 0,10922 m

So Pitch line velocity of the smaller sprocket is:

 .𝐷1 .𝑁1
V1 =
60

 .0,10922 𝑚 .1000 𝑅𝑝𝑚

V1 =
60 𝑠

V1 = 5,71 m/s

Load on the chain:

W = P/V1
2237 𝑁𝑚/𝑠
W = 5,71 𝑚/𝑠

W = 391.22 N
The load on chain has reduced from 1020 N to 391 N by changing the chain
into 08B type and change the smaller sprocket to 27 teeth and change the
larger sprocket to 43 teeth

Now we find out the length of chain by considering minimum centre distance
between the smaller and larger sprockets should be 30 to 50 times
the pitch. Let us take it as 30 times the pitch.
So the center distance between the sprocket is:
X = 30 . p
X = 30 . 12,7 mm
X = 381 mm

Then find out the number of chain links as follow:

𝑇1+𝑇1 2𝑥 𝑇2−𝑇1 2 𝑝
K= + +( )
2 𝑝 2 𝑥

27+43 2 .381 𝑚𝑚 43−27 2 12,7 𝑚𝑚

K= + +( )
2 12,7 𝑚𝑚 2 381 𝑚𝑚

K =95,21

So the length of chain is:

L = K.p
L = 95,21 . 12,7 mm
L = 1209,245 mm
L = 1,209 m
