NARRATIVE REPORT

The Soil Science Society will hold a seminar on "Delving into the Realm of
Plant Nutrition" on October 13, 2023, at the AVR Integrated Laboratory in the
College of Agriculture. This lecture was open to third and fourth year students in the
Soil Science Department. Dr. Roel R. Dayondon, a guest lecturer from Bukidnon, is
invited. He received his BS, MS, and PhD from Central Mindanao University, and he
presently works as a Senior Scientist in Plant Nutrition at Dole Philippines Inc.

Insights

Dr. Roel spoke on "the Principles of Pineapple Nutrient Management." Dole is

well-known both locally and globally for its fresh and processed pineapple products.
Dr. Role shares his experience on how they maintain their pineapple in high-quality
condition by providing the plant with the right nourishment for growth and produce.

He discussed and demonstrated how data was collected to determine nutrient

availability in the soil. He also demonstrated fertilizer application methods. Dole uses
foliar application on their pineapple fields, according to him, and he also explains the
procedure, formulation, and fertilizer they utilize in their pineapples. He also
discussed pineapple deficiency symptoms and ways for detecting and managing
nutrient problems and toxicity.

Observation

Nutrient management, as far as I can tell, is critical to crop development and

productivity. Large corporations, such as Dole, place an importance on product
quality. To reach this goal, they must develop and give sufficient sustenance for the
crops they grow in order to produce the desired result. However, it might cost a lot of
money.

Recommendation

I hope small farmers overlook the importance of soil nutrient in plants. Let’s
promote and spread awareness to the farmers about what proper fertilization and
management they can do to improve their crops.
