Woven fabric: The followings determine the structure of woven fabric:

1.Interlacing warp and weft which are at the right angle to each other in the plane of the fabric
produce woven fabric.
2.The direction of the length of the fabric and the weft in that of its width orient the warp.
3.Individual warp and weft yarns are called as ends and picks respectively.
4.A coherent structure is produced by interlacing the ends and picks with other.
5.The repeating pattern of interlacing is called the weave.

Classification of woven fabric: Woven fabric is classified into simple structure and compound
structure based on the structure.

Features of simple structure:

1.The ends and picks are interlaced with one another at right angle.
2.Threads of each group are respectively parallel to each other.
3.Only one series of ends and picks are used in the construction.
4.Both the aspect of utility or performance in a fabric and the aspects of aesthetic apparel rely on
all the constituent threads.

Features of compound structure:

1.More than one series of ends and picks are used in the structure.
2.The body of the fabric such as ground yarns determines some of the threads. Some may be
employed entirely for ornamental purposes such as figuring and face yarns.
3.Some threads may be not found in the parallel formation one to another in either plane and
indeed there are many pile surface construction in which some threads may project out at right
angles to the general plane of the fabric, i.e. pile or towel.

A weave is the interlacing pattern of the warp and weft. Two kinds of interlacing are
possible : Warp overlap in which warp is above weft. Weft overlap in which weft is
above warp.
Fundamental Factors Affect Woven Cloth Structure
Woven cloth structure differs because of various fundamental factors. Fundamental factors
have great influence on woven cloth structure.

Yarn types: Yarn types decide the appearance of the woven fabric. Yarns are classified into
natural and synthetic. A fabric could be weaved by single types of yarn or the combination of
natural yarn and synthetic yarn based on the requirements of customers. The appearance of same
structured cloths could vary on the yarn types.

Count of yarn: Count of yarn means the fineness of the yarn having great impact on the fabric
structure. Designer chooses the count of the yarn for requirements. The woven cloth structure
varies on the count or relative thickness of the yarn which is used as warp or weft. In general,
warp has less count than weft.

Number of ends and picks: The woven cloth structure varies on the relative setting or the
number of ends and picks. Ends and picks are placed side by side in a given width the length of
cloth which is determined by EPI and PPI having influence on the weight of fabric. The number
of ends and picks also affects comfort.

Interlacing system: Woven cloth structure also varies on the order of interlacement of ends and
picks. Plain, twill or satin are different from each other. Interlacement depends on the design of
the fabric.

Finishing: Finishing operation has impact on the appearance of the woven fabric. By finishing
modifications, fabrics become smooth, hard, water proof or fire proof.
